About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator II, Lead within the Public Works Department, Stormwater Division. This position leads a crew involved in the operation of the vac-con truck in the day to day cleaning of the stormwater catch basins, pipes and culverts within the street rights of way.
This position utilizes equipment that have mechanisms that are somewhat complex to operate, requiring more dexterity and finesse, or larger vehicles requiring a higher level of skill to drive and maneuver in and around confined spaces, and provides lead guidance, direction, and training to assigned staff.
What you'll be doing:
- Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks to complete assigned work; and assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.
- Operates various equipment and vehicles to complete tasks related to the maintenance, repair and construction of City storm drainage systems, and other infrastructure projects.
- Operates the vac-con truck in the day to day cleaning of the stormwater catch basins, pipes and culverts within the street rights of way.
- Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day: performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
- Performs manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and repair projects: lifts, moves, loads, and unloads materials, equipment, tools, and supplies; digs ditches, trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovels, rakes, spreads, compacts, and levels dirt, rock, asphalt, cement, and other materials.
- Performs other duties in support of City operations: provides coverage during special events and activities; responds to emergency and disaster situations; provides assistance to other employees or departments; and performs other related duties as required.
- Follows established safety procedures: utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear: monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
$23.59 per hour13 paid holidays, 12 paid sick days, and 10 paid vacation days

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
Education & Experience:- High School Diploma or equivalency (GED)
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating trucks and/or equipment such as a dump truck, roll off truck, tractor trailer, box truck, tanker truck, tractor, skid steer, track hoe/excavator, loader, trench roller, tamp or similar and experience serving as a lead worker.
- Experience serving as a lead worker or a similar supervisory role is preferred
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with ability to obtain a Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire).

Other things to know:
This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with City policy.Schedule: Four day workweek. 40 hours per week, Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. This position may also require work on Fridays, nights, and weekends for emergencies or inclement weather situations.
