Position Description
The lifeguard instructor will lead, train, and evaluate lifeguards; manage pool operations; and ensure the safety of patrons at the Edina Aquatic Center (EAC). This is a seasonal leadership role that is extremely visible, highly interactive, and physically enduring. This position is supervised by, and reports to, the Facility Coordinator of Edinborough Park and the Edina Aquatic Center.
This is a seasonal position beginning in Mid-May and ending in August. Scheduled shifts include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays approximately 35 - 40 hours per week. The maximum number of hours available each week is 40.
Typical Shift Times
- Weekdays – 9:45am-4pm, 3:45-9pm
- Weekends – 9:00-3:30pm, 3:15-8pm
Shift start or end times may vary due to facility needs. Examples include inclement weather, lifeguard staffing levels, special events, rentals, and training sessions.

INCENTIVE BONUS:
Seasonal Commitment Program: Receive a $200 incentive when you work the entire seasonal range of June 5, 2025 - August 17, 2025, at the Edina Aquatic Center. Eligible employees (current City of Edina seasonal/part-time employees) will receive the lump sum payment if they work the entire season, with satisfactory performance and with no unexcused absences. Lifeguard Instructors must work through August 17, and a minimum of 275 paid hours to be eligible for the commitment bonus.
Essential Functions
- Supervise, organize, motivate, and schedule lifeguard staff throughout the course of the season. Provide remedial training when necessary.
- Uphold the City of Edina values of Integrity, Quality, and Service (IQS) in all interactions with guests and other staff.
- Notify supervisors of disturbances, emergencies and staff performance problems.
- Plan and execute weekly in-service sessions, ensuring all metrics of the Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training program are strictly adhered to.
- Maintain facility cleanliness and report safety or mechanical problems immediately.
- Assist seasonal Aquatic Managers with facility opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain a high level of readiness (mental and physical) to respond to emergency situations with water rescue, first aid, and CPR.
- Perform regular inspection and inventory of rescue equipment and first aid supplies.
- Enforce policies and procedures, created in accordance with OSHA, Ellis & Associates, and the Minnesota State Health Department, to ensure the safety of guests and staff.
- Demonstrate confidence, knowledge and leadership while providing detailed instruction to lifeguards.
- Communicate in a clear, concise manner.
- Complete incident reports and Ellis’s checklists.
- Handle sensitive information and follow procedures.
- Assist with record management related to lifeguards, forms and training resources.
- Always demonstrate professional and courteous behavior with the public and staff.
Qualifications
- Must be 19 years of age or older
- Current Ellis & Associates Basic Lifeguard Certification/Course Completion Credential
- 2 years of lifeguarding experience.
- Attend and successfully complete the Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training course in Shoreview, MN; February 28-March 2, 2025. This course involves on deck and in water simulations, drills, individual and multiple rescuer techniques.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.

Physical Requirements
- Instructor trainer candidates participate in vigorous physical training. You must be in healthy physical condition to participate.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distant vision and peripheral vision.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk and hear.
- The Edina Aquatic Center is an outdoor facility, requiring work in all types of weather conditions; strong and unpleasant odors and fumes such as chlorine; noise from children; allergens such as pollen and bee stings; pool chemical fluctuations which might cause irritation to eyes and skin; and possibility of administering first aid which may involve exposure to infections leading to chronic disease or death. Applicants must be able to perform all essential position functions under the working conditions previously described.
Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- 3 years or more of Ellis & Associates Basic Lifeguard certification and lifeguarding experience.
- Current Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor certification
- Previous leadership role in aquatic setting
- Previous participation in aquatic programming (swim/dive team, swim safety, etc.).
- Previous experience providing outstanding customer service.
- Potential to fulfill two-year instructor commitment.
- Experience working with recreation management software and WhenIWork employee scheduling software.
- Ability to apply good cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse population.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships.
- Ability to understand and follow work rules, policies, and procedures, both verbal and written.
- Display basic professional conduct in the workplace, including respectful communication and civility towards others.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm and ability to perform all essential duties as described above.

The Edina Aquatic Center is an outdoor facility, requiring work in all types of weather conditions. This position requires successful completion of Ellis & Associates ILTP course (held prior to the season beginning).
Candidate MUST be available to attend and complete the Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor training course on the following dates/times: February 28-Mar 2, 2025, in Shoreview, Minnesota
