The City of Overland Park has a part-time Train Garden Attendant, Arboretum position available in the Parks and Recreation Department.
JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Responsible for the assembly, operation, and maintenance of miniature G-scale trains within the Arboretum & Botanical Gardens outdoor Train Garden. The position ensures the operational functionality of all train garden features and provides visitor engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assemble and set up various miniature train systems and tracks in the garden railway exhibit. Ensure the proper operation of trains throughout the day by monitoring performance and making necessary adjustments.
- Regularly inspect, clean, and maintain the trains, tracks, and related equipment to ensure reliability and functionality. Ensure sidewalks, seating areas, miniature scenery, and buildings at the Train Garden are kept clean and professional.
- Notify Supervisor of any repairs or parts replacement that may be needed and/or provide minor repairs within scope of training.
- Notify Supervisor of any clean up or plant care requests and/or provide clean up assistance under specific parameters.
- Provide excellent customer service by engaging with visitors, answering questions, sharing information about the Train Garden exhibit, and effectively communicating rules and safety to visitors of all ages.
- Assist with special events or themed exhibits, incorporating the miniature train system into seasonal displays, which may involve adding and removing seasonal miniatures.
- The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
- The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic education equaling 8 grades and a minimum of 14 years of age.
EXPERIENCE:
- This is an entry-level position. No previous experience is required.
- Customer service experience preferred.
SKILLS:
- B asic mathematical and accounting skills.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
