General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to locate electric, communications, water, and sewer lines. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires one year in electrical, mechanical or communications maintenance or closely related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of practices, methods, and tools of the maintenance, electrical, and communications trade.
- Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in electrical and various mechanical trades.
- Ability to do strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to read and correct utility maps to determine location of electric lines.
- Ability to read and understand locate tickets and work within the system designated for use by the City.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Completes locates for electric, fiber, water, and sewer lines prior to excavations.
- Makes notations and sketches that are used to update and maintain the GIS mapping system. Completes map corrections and reviews maps for quality assurance.
- Responds and communicates in response to excavation damage for electric and fiber lines.
- Completes and interprets SC811 communications and documentation.
- Pulls after hours rotational backup call on other areas including electric substations, metering, traffic signals, and stand-by generators.
- Assists in restoring power to the electric distribution system during storms and outages. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
