We're currently recruiting for a Recreation Specialist. This position will assist with programming, and operational tasks and duties in support of the overall recreation programs at Firstenburg and / or Marshall Community Center. Programs may include a variety of the following areas : youth, teen and adult sports, recreational programs for all ages and abilities, camps for all ages, open drop in gymnasium, weight room, fitness center, group exercise, climbing wall, after school programs. This position requires the ability to be able to facilitate and assist in all recreational program areas as needed.

This is a part-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and AFSCME. Job Details

Essential Functions :

  • Implement activities / programs, events, and drop-in programs related to social development and recreation. This entails serving as the lead staff / instructor, considering safety, creating supply orders, and assisting with lesson plan creation while considering customer needs.
  • On-site lead for 3-5 temporary / season staff.
  • Provide internal and external customer service in-person, by phone and / or by email for inquiries, requests, comment cards and other related concerns related to programs. Assist with researching customer needs for classes and programs. Respond to and resolve sometimes difficult and sensitive citizen inquires and complaints. Professionally address difficult customers and / or behavioral concerns. Take appropriate action for misconduct of customers within program area including removal or suspension.
  • Assist in on-going training, coaching, (re)certification process for temporary / seasonal staff, FTE staff.
  • Ensure communication and incident / issue follow-up with team, Programs team and / or Center Directors utilizing approved forms, processes, and communication protocol.
  • Work in software systems in Parks and Recreation Department; ePACT; When to Work; Team Sideline; ActiveNet, Formstack and Workday.
  • Work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends. On-call for emergent staff coverage needs.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Two (2) years of experience working in recreation environment.
  • Equivalent to a HS Diploma / GED.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

    Computer Skills

  • Microsoft Outlook / TEAMS - Beginner
  • Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) - Beginner
  • Required Licenses and / or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid Driver's license
  • Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR, AED within six months of hire date
  • Knowledge

  • Recreation programming and experience in a recreation setting
  • Professional customer service and problem-solving customer situations
  • Employee training and program evaluation techniques
  • Facilitation of parent meetings and large groups of youth
  • Creating lesson plans for camps and programs
  • Implementing staff training for recreational leagues, classes, and programs
  • Building and field safety inspections
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment and basic software
  • Abilities

  • Implement City, department, program and building safety policies and procedures
  • Implement discipline actions for customer behaviors and Code of Conduct issues
  • Complete projects and programs professionally, accurately, and successfully
  • Collaborate with internal and external groups or individuals to make decisions and solve problems
  • Successfully work with a diverse population of staff, volunteers and participants of all ages and abilities
  • Schedule league games, practices, and playoffs
  • Facilitating and participating effectively and professionally in meetings to produce goals and outcomes
  • Operate a personal computer and appropriate software
  • Work in a manner consistent with the City of Vancouver's Operating Principles and Values
  • Consistently provide quality customer service
  • Maintain regular and dependable attendance
  • Demonstrate a commitment to valuing differences among people and to being inclusive
  • Show the utmost respect for others, and act as a team player
  • Promote safety as a guiding principle and a regular practice in accomplishing work by focusing on safe practices and complying with safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions which may be hazardous to an employee or to the public.
  • Works in safe and responsible manner; not putting self or others at risk. Complies with applicable policies and procedures including but not limited to using personal protective equipment, observing warning signs, learning about potential hazards, and reporting all unsafe conditions.
  • This position is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment reference check, a basic criminal background check, and a driving abstract.
