The Civil Service Office is now accepting applications for the position of Plant Maintenance Mechanic in the Public Service Department. This examination is open for consideration to all interested and qualified permanent/classified AFSCME employees in the Public Service Department as well as the general public.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: high school degree, GED or equivalent appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities and demonstrable mechanical ability and training to learn plant maintenance skills. Work experience in industrial mechanics.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
State motor vehicle operator’s license.
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance and repairs to water or wastewater plant equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.
- Performs major and minor repairs to water and wastewater plant equipment. Confers with experienced and skilled Plant Maintenance Mechanics, as necessary, to troubleshoot difficult maintenance problems, and make skilled repairs.
- Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment. Oils and greases mechanical equipment such as shafts, bearings, sprockets, drive chains, gears, pulleys, etc. Replaces piping and fittings. Threads and bends pipe. Packs pump and valves as required.
- Repairs, adjusts and replaces chains and sprockets on bar screens, rakes, grit chamber and related equipment. Repairs, adjusts and rebuilds collector mechanisms on primary and secondary clarifiers, pumps and motors.
- Runs electrical conduit and pulls wire to install new equipment. Performs electrical work including 24 volt DC to 480 volt AC three phase. Rebuilds 480 AC contactors and starters.
- Fabricates and designs all types of equipment to be used for plant and other departments. Operates metal break press to fabricate guards, vents and sample carriers. Operates milling machine to mill raw stock and fabricate parts, and makes keyways in shafts. Operates lathe to make shims, shafts and shear pins for plant, and threading rods for plant equipment.
- Welds aluminum, steel, stainless steel and cast-iron. Operates torch to cut metal, braze, and solder.
- Maintains and repairs regulator and flapper, and lift stations in confined spaces.
- Performs carpentry, masonry and electrical repairs in conjunction with maintenance work.
- Makes skilled electrical, electronic and mechanical repairs to water and wastewater plant operating equipment. Maintains and repairs regulator and flapper, and lift stations.

May be assigned to supervise plant maintenance operations in absence of Plant Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor in Wastewater Plant [or Water Plant Superintendent].

WORKING CONDITIONS
Occasional exposure to heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dirt, and dust. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to abrasions and other injuries while working on, or around plant equipment.
