Position: Housing Counselor
Reports To: Diversion Program Manager
Status: Full Time Hourly
OVERVIEW: Under the direct supervision of the Diversion Program Manager, the Housing Counselor will use conflict resolution strategies to divert clients seeking shelter at the Coalition’s front door. Using a client-centered/housing first approach, this position seeks to empower persons to chart their own path back to housing, and then assist them in helping them implement their plan. This position requires a high degree of professionalism, commitment and adaptability in order to effectively uphold coalition values and maintain an environment of dignity, respect and cooperation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Candidates must possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent number of college credits in a social services field. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Degrees from other disciplines will be accepted given the candidate provides evidence of prior experience that would allow them to competently perform the primary duties listed below.
· Individuals that have been working in the field, but do not possess a degree will be considered if they have five or more years of documented social service experience.
· Homeless services, case management, mental health, permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing experience preferred.
· Commitment and ability to engage in an empathetic, non-judgmental way with people in stressful situations; to establish rapport in order to help resolve homeless households immediate housing crisis.
· Flexible work schedule to include some evenings and/or weekends. Will be expected to meet clients at times that are convenient for the client and outside of regular work schedule.
· Must be proficient in written and verbal communication.
· The ability to effectively serve a very diverse population with aptitude in the areas of conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving.
· Cultural competence across all populations.

HOUSING COUNSELOR DUTIES:
· Initiate creative problem solving conversations to identify solutions to immediate housing crisis to all households that enter the Intake Center.
· Identify and implement strategies that will prevent homeless persons from having to enter shelter.
· Provide conflict resolution and mediation services with clients’ landlord, family or friends.
· Assist clients with connections to family and other supports.

· Provide strengths-based case management to all Diversion clientele.
· Seek to bolster persons’ own ability to think for themselves, weigh and consider options, advocate for their own needs, and ultimately act on their own behalf.
· Assist clients with access to mainstream services and benefits.
· Provide assistance with locating affordable housing and advocacy.
· Demonstrate effective communication skills in building relationships with all staff and clients.
· Treat all guests, volunteers and staff with respect and dignity.
· Maintain strict confidentiality of all information.
· Adhere to Coalition policies and procedures.
· Conduct intakes.
· Enter client information accurately in the Homeless Manager Information System (HMIS) in a timely fashion.
· Perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the program, and other duties as assigned by the Diversion/Intake Program Manager.
· Productivity measurements will be monitored closely. Productivity will be measured based on the amount of clients successfully diverted. Expectation is no less than thirty (30) clients successfully diverted per month.
REQUIRED SKILLS:

· Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word with the ability to learn new programs.
