Position Description

The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) in Duluth, MN, invites applications for a tenure-track bioinformatics and mathematics faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2025. The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in bioinformatics or mathematics with a background in bioinformatics. Faculty at CSS are expected to teach 24-contact hours each academic year, engage in scholarship, foster a culture of inclusion in the classroom, and participate in faculty service both within the department and in the College as a whole. In addition, the individual hired will be responsible for developing an undergraduate bioinformatics program in collaboration with other STEM faculty – starting with a minor and eventually leading to a bioinformatics major. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations, cross-cultural communication, and multicultural competency.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include developing and teaching new bioinformatics courses as well as teaching existing mathematics courses across all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. The successful candidate may also teach biology courses depending on their interests and expertise as well as biology program needs. We are particularly interested in faculty who are able to engage students across STEM disciplines in undergraduate research experiences.

This position is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment. Applications received by March 17th, 2025, will receive full consideration. About The College

CSS is a small liberal arts college committed to the values of Respect, Hospitality, Stewardship, Community, and Love of Learning. The Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Math, and Physics (BCMP) hosts the Mathematics BA degree and will house the new bioinformatics programs. The department also has two chemistry majors (an ACS-accredited BS and a BA) and a biochemistry major (ASBMB-accredited BS). The Department of Biology offers a Biology BS degree. Faculty in both the BCMP and Biology departments are eager to collaborate with a new colleague on the new bioinformatics programs. Additionally, the College also has a Computer Information Systems (CIS) department that hosts both a Computer Science BS and a Data Analytics minor (among other programs) – both of which include coursework that may be relevant to the new bioinformatics program.

Key Results/Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate mathematics courses across all levels
  • Develop bioinformatics programs in collaboration with faculty across STEM departments
  • Design and teach new bioinformatics courses in service of the bioinformatics programs
  • Develop a research program that includes undergraduate participation
  • Serve as an advisor for students in the bioinformatics and math programs
  • Participate in the work of the department, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the College through faculty governance, committee work, and other opportunities
  • Contribute to and participate in fostering a culture of inclusion in support of College diversity goals

Required Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in bioinformatics or mathematics with a background in bioinformatics

Preferred Qualifications

  • College teaching experience as the instructor of record for one or more full semesters, including the use of innovative pedagogical approaches
  • Previous coursework or significant professional development in teaching and pedagogy
  • Experience developing an undergraduate bioinformatics program
  • Experience designing undergraduate mathematics and/or bioinformatics courses
  • Experience teaching both lower- and upper-division mathematics courses to non-math majors (e.g. science majors)
  • Experience teaching introductory mathematics courses to non-STEM majors
  • Experience engaging students, especially undergraduates across STEM majors, in research experiences

Compensation

Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics and Mathematics (9-months): $54,900-$62,800
