BASIC PURPOSE:
The Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting the Recreation Director with planning and executing resident activities and providing activity programs based on resident’s level of interest. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent
with the assisted living philosophy.
MAJOR WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Assists Recreation Director with organizing activities, completing monthly calendars, providing input/ideas for monthly newsletter, setting up and breaking down of activities.
- Takes a role in implementing and leading daily, special, cognitive and seasonal events of the facility, in accordance with approval from the Director. Uses creative ways to get residents involved, engaging methods and techniques to encourage participation.
- Place seasonal & special decorations throughout the facility that encourages awareness and interest reflecting the overall personality of the residents.
- Perform 1:1 interaction and in-room visits on a monthly basis.
- Participates with the interdisciplinary team by keeping and updating resident activity profiles daily/weekly and contributes in-put to progress notes, twice yearly. Communicates to Recreation Director regarding resident’s level of interest, assists and offers alternative solutions.
- Drives activity bus for recreational outings, during off-campus activities, including, but not limited to, pushing of wheelchairs and assisting in monitoring of residents.
- Communicates and works closely with nursing staff to encourage and assist residents to participate in activities, as well as relaying any change of behavior, either cognitively or physically to nursing staff.
- Monitor resident activity performance and maintain proper documentation through daily participation records.
- Fills in as needed and carries out responsibilities of Recreation Director in his/her absence.
- Run errands as assigned to provide materials necessary to perform daily activities within appropriate guidelines.
- Be familiar with safety and emergency equipment in facility vehicles, both in understanding and use of equipment.
- Completes necessary forms as mandated by AL and State regulations.
- Attends required committee meetings and continuing education to include but not limited to Dementia related in-service(s) or workshops relating to the job.
- Performs specific work duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Provides assistance (as last resort) to transportation department with medical appointments in the absence of back-up.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Physical exertion required at least 60% of the time. Physical exertion is described as standing, kneeling and bending.
- Physical job demands may be subject to possible modifications to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities.
- Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle, including a large van. Various pieces of standard maintenance equipment may be utilized.
- Knowledge of safe driving skills and capable of making responsible decisions relating to transporting residents.
- Moderate exposure to infectious disease.
- May work in areas with high voltage, hazardous equipment and chemicals, and moving parts.
- May be exposed to noisy or busy environment or elements of weather, including heat, cold, and rain.
- Utilize the following equipment including but not limited to telephone, computer & printer, copier, fax, bus lift, fire extinguisher, kitchen appliances and electrical devices.
- Read, write & speak English
- Exposure to peculiarities in behavior and reactions of the aged, including combative residents.
- Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and non-verbal communication from resident’s diverse stages of development, i.e. adults and geriatrics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High school degree or equivalency is required.
Licensure/Certification:
Must have a State of North Carolina Commerical Driver’s License (CDL) with P endorsement or be willing and able to obtain such license within six months of employment. CPR/First Aid course preferred.
Experience:
Experience in geriatrics, recreation, or social administration and experience with dementia care preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
