The DayDream Farmer is creating a new farm on Dimmick Rd in Gansevoort (Wilton), NY. The farm specializes in growing lettuce mix consistently for its Local Farm Cooperative April - November. The farm will also grow a handful of crops for its farmstand in 2025 along with cut flowers.
The DayDream Farmer is looking for a part-time farmhand to assist in the farm fields. The position calls for someone who is an extremely hard worker and interested in learning new skills. Past farming experience is great but not required. Past experience is great if the applicant is not set in their own way of doing things. Every farm has unique systems and different methods for completing similar tasks. The applicant should be willing to learn our farm’s systems and methods. The applicant should be able to work in all weather conditions, be able to lift 50 pounds, and stand for a long period of time. This job is for someone who enjoys, even loves manual labor.
Duties include:
- Weeding, raking, carrying heavy buckets of compost, picking up lots of sticks and roots from the soil
- Planting, harvesting, washing vegetables
- Learning how to set up and fix irrigation
- Seeding crops and transplanting
- Learning food safety practices in the wash/pack station
- Weigh out and bagging lettuce and other vegetables
- Harvest flower bouquets
- Helping put CSA boxes together at Co-op Shed
Schedule:
This position would begin mid April and end sometime in October. The schedule could be Monday - Friday, 8am - 1pm. But could also be flexible. I try to get a lot of the field work done in the mornings before it gets hot, especially in July/August. The big harvest/wash day is Thursday for lettuce.
The position is part-time unless the applicant is also interested in helping out at the garden center/farmstand, then there could be more hours. If the applicant is interested in greenhouse work March and April there are some hours available. We would need help on certain days/times to pot up hanging baskets and transplant. The greenhouses are located 45 minutes away in Arlington, VT.
