JOB TITLE: Generalist, Human Resources 

DEPARTMENT: Talent and Culture 

REPORTS TO: Manager, Human Resources

CLASSIFICATIONFull-Time, Exempt

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Occasional - This position is based in Detroit, Michigan, with the expectation of regular onsite work. This role has the ability to be remote occasionally up to one day per week.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY 

Under the guidance of the Manager, Human Resources the Generalist, Human Resources coordinates the day-to-day administration of Human Resources operations. The Generalist, Human Resources is responsible for a wide range of HR functions including benefits administration, payroll management, recruiting, Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) administration, and compliance.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Manage payroll administration to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and best practices.  
  • Manage Human Resource Information System records, training records, employment files, and other records in compliance with laws, regulations, best practices, and department procedures. 
  • Audit and analyze HR data to ensure that all records are accurate and provide data-driven recommendations for changes and process improvements. 
  • Manage day to day needs for all health and welfare benefits, including COBRA, FMLA and other leaves of absence, disability, paid time off, and worker’s compensation. 
  • Coordinate benefit claims resolution, change reporting, and monitor benefit changes. 
  • Provide support to employees with benefit questions or issues.  
  • Assist in the management of the frozen DIA pension plan including processing retirements and adjustments.
  • Process and resolve corrective actions including holding information gathering meetings, reviewing and approving paperwork, and representing HR in meetings.
  • Conduct investigations to actively resolve assigned employee relations issues and recommend appropriate outcomes aligned with museum policies and best practice.  
  • Participate in strategic recruitment process for assigned positions including posting, sourcing, selecting, and prescreening candidates; coordinating interviews; and preparing job offers. 
  • Manage new hire on-boarding activities in partnership with HR Coordinator.  
  • Maintain museum-wide organizational charts with updates and changes. Perform other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field required. Six (6) years of experience managing payroll, HRIS, and benefits required. Strong data management and analysis skills required. Strong Microsoft Office skills required. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.  
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to plan, manage, prioritize, and complete multiple on-going projects to meet deadlines and goals. 
  • Must possess a demonstrated understanding of ethical business conduct and professional practices including maintenance and protection of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to provide information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally through talking or writing. 
  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills to identify critical information and complete projects and goals.
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems and report writing software, ADP Workforce Now preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with, manage and oversee vendors to meet expectations and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changes in priorities based on operational need.
  • Ability to respond calmly and make decisions in urgent and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams. 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork.  This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
