What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional position at THE EMPOWERMENT CENTER?
The Empowerment Center is currently seeking several Direct Support Professionals (DSP) to work flexible schedules, which may include evenings and weekends, in and around the Hampton Roads and Peninsula (including Yorktown, Williamsburg, and the surrounding areas). Our Direct Support Professionals work with individuals who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities directly in the individual within their community.
As a DSP, you'll empower adults with a developmental disability to live happy, lively, and content lives as you provide support for daily activities. Daily activities can include hygiene care, dressing, meal preparation, and community outings. You can also support the individuals in accomplishing their goals and dreams daily.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Assist and train individuals in a center setting to enable the individual to maintain health status, develop skills in ADL’s and adapt to the community and home environments. Empower and support each individual in developing their lifestyle.
· Train in functional skills related to personal care (daily living skills, grooming, dressing, eating, etc.)
· Train in functional skills related to the use of community resources (transportation, shopping social and recreational activities, etc.)
· Monitor health and physical condition and assist with medication and or medical needs.
· Assist with personal care, ADLs, and use of community resources (completing personal care tasks when physically unable to do so, ensuring hygiene and eating needs are met complete daily tasks)
· Train in adapting behavior for home and community (redirecting anger, handling social encounters with others, developing a circle of support)
· Ensures all services are documented as required by agency procedures and regulatory standards
· Reads and follows the Individualized Service Plan (ISP) for individuals
· Completes and submits required daily paperwork, and monthly progress reviews/supervision for each individual according to established agency guidelines
· Demonstrates understanding of Human Rights Rules and Regulations and upholds the Human Rights Plan.
· Ability to bend, stoop, sit, stand, reach and lift items when at least 50 pounds

· Pre-employment drug testing and random drug/alcohol testing throughout employment.

Qualifications
· Must be 18 years of age or older.
· High School or GED Diploma preferred. 12 months of experience working with the Developmentally Disabled/Intellectually Disabled population preferred.
· Access to a personal vehicle for client transport as required.
· Must consent to criminal records check, including a fingerprint check.
· Valid VA driver's license required with acceptable driving record.
· Must complete a TB Screening.
· Once hired, must complete all required training promptly – DD Staff Orientation Test, Staff Competencies, TOVA, First Aid/CPR/AED, Behavior Intervention, Emergency Preparedness, Person Centeredness, Infection Control to include Flu Epidemics, Human Rights, and Serious Incident Reporting.
