Job Summary
The Accountant is responsible for all accounting operations of the Diocese and participates in managing a small office. This role will work closely with senior management to manage the diocese's overall financial strategy. In addition to maintaining the financial integrity of the Diocese's books, the Accountant serves as the primary fiscal contact for the Trustees of the Diocese and for the parish treasurers. This role requires a strong understanding of non-profit accounting principles. Other responsibilities include working with staff members to handle all of the general operations of the office.
Responsibilities
- Finance and Budget Operations
- Manage and account for the operating, designated, restricted, and endowment funds of the Diocese
- Prepare financial reports for identified stakeholders, including the Trustees, Commission on Finance, and Executive Council; attend their meetings and/or brief the chairperson
- Manage the annual budget process for the Diocese and selected entities within
- Prepare annual reports for The Episcopal Church
- Assist in preparing grant requests and work with grantees to manage grant funds, prepare reports, etc.
- Coordinate annual external audit of Diocesan financial accounts
- Prepare ad-hoc financial reports and analyses as requested by leadership
- Act as primary liaison with 3rd party investment manager
- Comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), auditing principles, and internal controls
- Work with staff members to manage mail, phone calls, database updates, occasional visitors, and the administrative needs of the senior staff
- Assist treasurers, lay leaders, and clergy of congregations and entities of the diocese
- Report to and assist the Chief Financial Officer
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Diocesan staff
- Ensure appropriate confidentiality with personnel, financial records and personal matters, which are entrusted to the Finance Department
- Familiarity with the Episcopal Church helpful but not required
Skills
- Accounting degree required, CPA license preferred
- 4 or more years of accounting experience is required
- Experience and competency using various software and accounting systems
- Willingness to learn a proprietary database and accounting system
The office is in Burlington, Vermont. Applicants must be able to commute daily to the office; no moving costs are provided for anyone living outside of the immediate area.
