What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Technician for Autologous Serum Eye Drops -PRN position at The Eye Bank of Kentucky?
The Eye Bank of Kentucky is seeking individuals to assist our office staff in the blood draw and preparation of autologous serum eye drops, as a PRN ("as needed") Autologous Serum Eye Drops Lab Technician at our Louisville location.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The positional duties may include any or all of the following:
- Handling of blood products and needles and sharps.
- Collection of blood specimens according to established procedures.
- Confirm and verify all written and electronic physician orders.
- Follow-up directly with physicians when orders are incomplete to obtain the required information.
- Processing blood components in a laminar flow hood or other sterile environment using aseptic technique.
- Processing of specimens including labeling, centrifuging, diluting, aliquoting, freezing and preparing for transport as required by physician test orders.
- Packaging distributed products for shipment and/or pick-up.
- Perform regular laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance.
- Maintain compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), HIPAA, OSHA and federal and state regulations.
- Maintain complete and accurate processing and preparation document records, including data entry in database.
- Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
- Provide timely and effective verbal and written communication for any issues.
- Obtain identification and accurately enter billing information and collect payments when required, following established policies, procedures, and protocols..
Education:
- High school diploma and an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in medical, or surgical background or equivalent work experience.
- Previous experience as a phlebotomist, certification preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the principles of aseptic technique.
- Ability to work independently, with limited direction, and in a team environment.
- Ability to work with distraction and to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office, general database, and web-based applications.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record as determined by the organization.
- Must have reliable transportation.

Desired skills:
- Previous phlebotomy and hospital cleanroom experience.
- Previous sterile compounding pharmacy experience.
- A tech who has experience working within a laminar flow hood or in a sterile environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail and accuracy
- Hepatitis B vaccination
- Ability to lift at least 30 lbs
