What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Nursing (DON) position at The Fogarty Center?
The Fogarty Center is excited to welcome a Director of Nursing to our team of long-term care professionals. The Director of Nursing (DoN) is responsible for supervising all aspects of the health care maintenance and nursing services related to the individuals supported by The Fogarty Center. The DoN will maintain a caseload of 2-3 group homes (approximately 10-15 clients) in addition to the position’s administrative duties. The DoN works closely with the human resources department to maintain and create training programs for all clinical staff. The DoN leads several areas of the nursing process including education, planning, and evaluation of nursing care of supported people. Related duties also include coordinating policies and procedures in the interprofessional team. Additionally, the DoN is responsible for the planning and implementation of wellness initiatives within The Fogarty Center to increase the productivity and excellence of employees, improve agency culture, and reduce burnout.
Supervision Received
The Director of Nursing works under the direct supervision of the Chief Operating Officer and/or designee
Supervision Exercised
The Director of Nursing exercises direct supervision of the residential and vocational nurses and/or related medical coordinators providing direct care services and assigning responsibilities in accordance with the qualifications and experience. He/she provides professional nursing supervision and support to the program manager(s) and support professionals. The DoN collaborates closely with the nursing team, chief operating officer, residential director, and associate directors.
Job Responsibilities (Administrative)
- Ensure compliance with all State, Federal laws, and Fogarty Center policies and/or procedures
- Coordinating all nursing services, both vocationally and residentially according to Federal standards, the RI Nurse Practice Act, and The Fogarty Center Health and Wellness standards
- Creating and conducting educational programs to be provided to support professionals commensurate with responsibilities
- Receiving and interpreting information relayed by the nursing team to develop quality improvement, wellness initiatives, and a culture of health promotion for staff and program participants
- Developing and maintaining rapport with professional and paraprofessional personnel responsible for implementing direct services to the clients for overall well-being of the program
- Attending all related meetings and participating as a member of the administrative team.
- Coordinating the emergency nursing on-call system
- All payroll responsibilities/accountability for the nursing team
- Conducting frequent nurse’s meetings for report, support, and troubleshooting as needed
- Set and lead well-being agenda for all staff and program participants
- Apply a population health model to provide employee and participant support
- Perform advocacy and policy work
Job Responsibilities (Nursing caseload)
- Nursing care coordination for 2-3 community group homes
- Coordinate individualized healthcare with participant’s providers, including appointment attendance as needed
- Visit each home regularly- review documentation, attend staff meetings, educate direct care staff on best practices and diagnosis-specific material, support and encourage direct care staff to be confident in medication administration and core competencies
- Foster an excellent interprofessional team environment through a warm, therapeutic communication style with staff, clients, and family
- Monitor medications for adverse reactions and report effects to family and/or physician
- Oversee medical issues and alert supervisors of issues and/or changes in client health
- Implement innovative teaching opportunities to direct support staff
- Be available by phone after hours for medical triage as needed: be part of a dynamic and progressive team of professionals in an environment that supports innovation, autonomy, and person-centered care
Job Requirements
- The Director of Nursing must hold a valid State of Rhode Island registered nurse license and current CPR and first aid certifications
- The Director of Nursing will have a bachelor’s degree in nursing education and a certification in developmental disability nursing, although consideration may be given if the applicant is actively pursuing this degree/certification
- Experience gained through professional working relationships with people who have developmental disabilities
- Working knowledge of all federal and state health regulations governing waiver group homes
- The ability to communicate effectively through training programs to disseminate knowledge of the nursing process to nurses, professional and paraprofessional personnel, and a combination of education and experience meeting waiver regulations
