Middle School Chinese Teacher (Part-Time)

The Foote School, an independent K-9 co-ed day school, seeks a part-time Chinese teacher.
The Foote School is an independent K-9 co-ed day school in New Haven, Connecticut. We aim to endow students with timeless values while providing thoughtful experiences that will prepare them to learn, lead, and grow in the 21st century; language study has a key place in this experience. Introduced in 2012, the Chinese program has become an important part of the school’s modern language offerings as students build their facility with speaking, listening, reading, and writing the language and grow in their appreciation of Chinese culture.
The successful candidate will be a nurturing, flexible person with a strong background in Chinese language instruction and an understanding of the developmental needs of children. He or she should be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and peers, as well as be able to employ a variety of instructional techniques to engage young learners. The successful candidate will have a commitment to our school’s mission, to working collaboratively with others, and to upholding the values of the school community.

Essential Duties and Requirements:
- Plan and present lessons.
- Prepare and administer regular and varied assessments of student learning.
- Regularly write reports that evaluate student performance and demonstrate knowledge of students’ experiences
- Communicate effectively in support of each student with their parents, advisor, and other teachers.
- Potentially serve as an advisor (or co-advisor) to one or more student clubs or activities.
- Performance of other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the School
Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in Chinese and/or education preferred.
- Proficiency with standard Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written, including simplified characters and pinyin, priority to native or heritage speakers
- Effective oral and written communication in English
- Experience teaching language instruction to students, preferably grades K-9
- Training in best practices as it relates to modern language pedagogy
- An appreciation for independent school education and the middle school years
- A willingness to collaborate with others and to contribute to the school community
- A commitment to professional growth and innovative thinking
- A clear interest in being part of a community that seeks to challenge prejudice and is committed to diversity and inclusion
