ASSISTANT VILLAGE LEADER
Position Summary
Assistant Village Leaders support the overall management of the camp by assisting in the day-to-day operations, supervising staff, coordinating camp schedules, and assisting with administrative work. This position is for applicants who exhibit strong counselor skills and emerging leadership skills. Each Assistant Village Leader is responsible for supporting campers and staff in a specific group. They work to support the village leader and the village, spending time as both a General Counselor and providing coverage when the Village Leader is off.
Assistant Village Leaders report to their Village Leader.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for supporting the supervision of a group of 12-15 staff members and a village of 36-48 campers daily and supervising the village when the Village Leader is off or off-site.
- Plan and supervise village activities and assist General Counselors in planning the cabin and village activities.
- Support the guidance and evaluation of counselors.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of campers.
- Demonstrate and role model positive camper behavior management techniques for staff and assist with camper-camper and camper-counselor behavioral issues/conflicts that may arise.
- Work with Camper Liaison to provide counselors with behavior management skills and extra support for campers.
- Explain and enforce the policies, traditions, and rules of the camp.
- Be an active member of the camp community by participating in camp programming, including camp-wide events, overnights, hikes, swimming, activities, and village meetings. At times, lifting heavy objects may be necessary.
- Maintain open communication between counselors and the administration.
- Address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment.
- Prepare and submit reports, staff evaluations, and inventories as requested.
- Support with 24-hour-a-day direct supervision, leadership, and guidance to campers with assigned co-counselors. This includes supervising the group in between and during the daily program, planning cabin activities, eating meals with campers, and behavior management.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of campers.
- Live in a cabin with 6-12 campers and co-counselors for the entire duration of each camp session.
- Understand that the position involves living in cabins with little to no privacy and eating all meals with campers in a large, noisy dining room.
- Assist Program Specialists during activity periods. This includes participating in activities and helping campers and Program Specialists as needed.
- Understand that campers come first, and decisions should be made in the best interest of the campers.
- Strive to work cooperatively with fellow staff to achieve the goals of the program.
- Invest time with campers and staff to meet their needs, challenge their capabilities, and serve as a role model during their time at camp.
- Understand that the position involves living in cabins with little to no privacy and eating all meals with campers in a large, noisy dining room. Time off during each encampment will be arranged by a supervisor.
- Assume responsibility for the use and care of camp equipment and facilities.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures and follow them when necessary.
- Additional responsibilities as needed and assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old by the start of camp.
- At least three years of college or equivalent is preferred. College graduates are strongly preferred.
- Should have extensive experience as a general counselor or staff member in a residential camp setting. Some administrative and/or supervisory experience is preferred.
- Must be able to supervise in a fair and diplomatic manner.
- Passionate about working with children.
- Interested in working and living outdoors for the summer.
- Emotionally mature with a willingness to work as a team player.
- Flexible, willing to accept challenges, and step outside your comfort zone.
- Able to maintain a positive attitude.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk or hear.
- Able to regularly lift and/or move equipment and supplies weighing 20 pounds.
- Comfortable with being exposed to wet, humid, and hot/very hot conditions.
- Driver’s license preferred.
- Available for the entire duration of the summer program.
Employment Period: June 8, 2025 — August 16, 2025
Compensation: The salary range is $2,700 - $3,000 commensurate with experience.
