Collections Technician
The Collections Technician assists the curatorial team in the handling, mounting, care, and storage of both permanent collection and loaned works of art. Tasks include the safe movement, installation, deinstallation, packing and unpacking, storage, and display of artwork and art shipments according to museum standards.

Reports to: Chief Curator & Director of Collections
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00-5:00 flex, approx. 20 hours/week
Status: Part-time, hourly non-exempt
Wage: $30.00/hr.
Responsibilities:
- Handling artwork and preparing artwork for exhibition, including hanging framed artwork, lifting, and securing three-dimensional artworks onto pedestals or platforms; moves, hangs, and positions exhibition casework and works of art of varying sizes, media, and fragility
- Mounts, attaches hanging hardware and installs exhibition signage and labels in the museum; assists with fabricating or finishing items needed for installation, including plinths, cleats, hanging brackets, risers, or cable hangers
- Movement of art, paintings, sculpture, and decorative art in galleries, storage, and preparation areas as directed for exhibition, acquisition, loan or conservation; records location changes in collections database
- Assist with historic housekeeping in Clayton
- Ensures safe storage of artifacts, rehousing objects as necessary, updating records in the database; assists with collections inventory and database administration
- Assists in acquisitions processes for occasional gifts and purchases; generates condition reports, incoming/outgoing receipts, entering information into the database, assigning accession numbers, and physically numbering or tagging artworks
- Under supervision of curators and the exhibitions manager, responsible for loading/unloading art shipments and crates
- Photograph objects for documentation
- Works professionally and cooperatively with all installation personnel and other employees, contractors, artists, and couriers. Follows all art-handling protocols and procedures as instructed by the Chief Curator and Collections Manager
Qualifications:
- Committed to fostering a workplace culture of accessibility, inclusion, diversity, and racial equity
- High School Diploma or equivalent necessary; bachelor’s degree in fine art or related field preferred
- One or more years’ experience in exhibit installation and preparations
- Must be familiar with museum standards for conservation, preservation, and object handling
- Ability to be flexible, communicative, and work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to identify problems and resolve them quickly
- Strong attention to detail, discretion, and follow-through
- Ability to work in high pressure situations
- Basic woodworking skills and knowledge of hand and power tools preferred
Physical Activities and Requirements
- Ability to lift, push, and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Must have good dexterity, hand eye coordination, and the ability to climb and to work on ladders or scaffolding for extended periods of time; to reach work with hands above shoulder level; to stand or walk for eight-hour day
