Friends Program Job Description

Position Title: Director of Emergency Housing FLSA Status: Full Time, Exempt

Position Reports To: Executive Director

General Summary:

The Director of Emergency Housing is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Friends Emergency Housing Program and for assisting in the development, recommendation, implementation, and administration of the agency program’s policies and business goals. Directs the activities of program staff and represents the agency to regulatory agencies, other similar agencies, trade associations and others.

The Director works primarily on site at our shelter facility, with community meetings and up to 20% remote time. The Director is responsible for the direct supervision of both full and part-time shelter staff at our year-round emergency shelter for nine families. Our shelter operates on a Housing First model.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Serves as a member of agency’s management team and participates in developing and implementing overall policies, programs, objectives and goals. Responsible for communicating to program staff necessary and appropriate information.
  • Leads the revision of operating policies, procedures, objectives, and goals for each area of responsibility to ensure that they support program policies and objectives.
  • Supervises, coaches, and evaluates Emergency Housing staff.
  • Assists in the review of legislation and legal decisions affecting the program and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and statues.
  • Develops and oversee an annual program budget. Ensures fiscally responsible management by operating within financial limitations.
  • In cooperation with the Executive Director and Development Director, coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of fundraising activities including: contributions, donations, corporate support, special events, grants and contracts.
  • Monitors the performance of subordinate areas of responsibility in attaining established business objectives. Takes corrective action in collaboration with the Executive Director when program objectives are not being attained. This includes:
  • A. Supervision of residents during their stay, ensuring they are informed of and abide by facility rules and policies.
  • B. Coordination of information regarding clients with their referring agency.
  • C. Maintenance, repair and renovation of the program's physical facilities.
  • D. Coordination with other agencies to assist clients in obtaining appropriate employment and adequate housing, etc.
  • E. Coordination of donated items.
  • Provides on-call support to shelter staff and occasional shift coverage.
  • Supervises the screening and training of volunteers
  • Represents the agency with clients, regulatory agencies, and in contacts with other similar agencies and trade associations, as assigned.
  • Assists the Executive Director with Quality Improvement, Risk Management, and Safety.
  • Directs personnel activities to ensure solid team efforts toward the attainment of program and agency goals.
  • Attends in-service/conferences required of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and experience in housing services, administration, human services, counseling, social work, or a related field.
  • Highly skilled in conflict resolution in support of clients.
  • Proven record and experience working with the homeless population and related service network.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as strong organizational and management abilities.
  • Experience in non-profit management including: budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, volunteer management, and community-based organizations.
  • Ability and experience in supervising staff and volunteers. Knowledge of basic budget and fiscal matters. Ability to effectively set and achieve goals.

Machines, Equipment Used:

  • General office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, computer.

Physical Requirements:

  • Good visual acuity and ability to communicate.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds and ability to push/pull a minimum of 30 pounds. Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing, and/or pulling are undertaken which exceed these minimum requirements.
  • Must be able to safely navigate stairs while carrying items.
  • Able to travel locally with some regularity.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detail oriented manner.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Indoor, temperature controlled, smoke-free environment. Occasional outdoor exposure.

Job Type: Full-time

Expected hours: 37.5 per week

Monday – Friday days with occasional need for nights/weekends due to program needs and/or shift coverage.

Hours are flexible based on shelter operational needs.

This individual must pass background screening for employment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 per year
