I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary :

The George Washington University Center for Teaching Excellence is in the Gelman Library on the Foggy Bottom campus and is responsible for working with over 2,500 faculty and 10,000 graduate students to improve teaching and course design. Our team includes educational developers, instructional designers, media producers, and instructional technology specialists. We are seeking a Director, Faculty Development to oversee the educational development team and faculty development programs that focus on in-person teaching. The Director, Faculty Development will report to the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

The Director, Faculty Development manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of faculty development programs that prepare educators to foster transformative learning at George Washington University. Working closely with faculty and university leadership, the Director of Faculty Development will help to establish a vibrant community in which all GW educators collaborate, innovate, and excel in teaching and learning. The Director of Faculty Development will join three other Directors in the Center for Teaching Excellence. This position is responsible for managing administrative aspects of the faculty development team, such as budgets, policy development, evaluation, and departmental logistics for initiatives and events. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance, and determines future staffing needs.

The Director, Faculty Development will :

  • Work with the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning Excellence and educational development staff to establish goals for faculty development, oversee and modify the organization of staff work and roles, and develop a full range of programs and services to achieve those goals.
  • Develop and lead strategies to support the dissemination of good teaching / learning practices by GW instructional staff including senior faculty, junior faculty, contract and adjunct faculty, graduate students, and post-docs.
  • Cooperate with the directors of online education, the instructional technology lab, and the digital media lab to create, implement, and assess Center for Teaching Excellence goals.
  • Work with faculty and staff to evaluate how GW policies encourage and discourage the continual improvement of teaching. Advocate changes in policies and practices to foster such improvements.
  • Help establish GW as a leader in the improvement of teaching and learning. As appropriate, seek grant support to enable the expansion of potentially influential activities.
  • Develop and manage budgets, expenditures and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and / or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Work closely with units including Academic Technologies, The Nashman Center for Engaged Learning, the Writing Program, and other units that help faculty teach.
  • Network with other institutions offering Teaching and Learning programs.
  • Develop and implement assessment plans to evaluate the effectiveness of faculty development programs activities and services.
  • Supervise faculty development staff and performs related personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, hiring, evaluating, training, supervising, promoting, coaching, counseling, termination, etc.).
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and consensus-building.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications :

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • A master’s degree in education or PhD in any area is highly desired.
  • 3 to 5 years of full-time teaching at the college or university level is desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories, models, and practical applications of higher education teaching, learning outcomes, and academic assessment.
  • Experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating educational development programs.
  • Superlative communication and motivational skills.
  • Successful administrative and management experience.
  • Track record of achieving creative or innovative results through coalition-building and effective conflict resolution.
  • Track record of working comfortably with faculty.
  • Breadth of experience across disciplines (able to speak more than one disciplinary language).
  • Evidence of excellent teaching skills (as a faculty member and / or leader of faculty development activities).
  • Familiarity with instructional uses of technology and with online learning.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship relevant to teaching (e.g., university teaching, online learning, etc.).
  • Record of leadership relating to some phase of instructional support or academic program improvement preferred.
  • Knowledge of the literature of higher learning, learning science, assessment, and institutional change preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and standing within, the George Washington University preferred.

    75,044.98 - $130,658.52
