Position Description & Job Summary:
Summer Science Camp Teacher Assistant, Part-Time
The Greensboro Science Center is looking for creative, energetic individuals who can share their science enthusiasm to teach hands-on, minds-on science camps for children ages 5 through 12 in general sciences or robotics. Assistants have a diverse job that requires flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor.
Minimum requirements are a high school degree and prior experience working with children in an instructional capacity (classroom or informal). The successful applicant will have demonstrated an interest in science and enjoy working closely with children. Candidates should also be well-organized and have a positive, outgoing demeanor. The hourly rate is $10.25/hour.
Along with general responsibilities listed below, the Greensboro Science Center offers 2 specialties for Teaching Assistants to choose from- General Science (biology, animal science, chemistry, physics, etc.) or Robotics (general engineering, LEGO Education products, WeDo 2.0 robotics, Spike Prime Robots, Simple Machines, etc.). Experience with all robotics kits is not required. General Science and Robotics teaching assistants work together as a team to help prepare for the camp weeks.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Work with a variety of teachers throughout the summer to present material to campers
- Support camps by carrying out administrative duties such as checking in/out campers and supervising extended day and snack breaks.
- Fill supply lists for teachers.
- Prepare for upcoming camps.
- Maintain excellent communication with and work with GSC staff members and volunteers.
- Positively interact with children and adults of all ages and abilities in a variety of settings.
- Maintain a safe and organized working and learning environment.
- Maintain education program supplies and materials.
- Dress appropriately for the day’s activities and adhere to the GSC dress code.
- Respond to emergency situations in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Greensboro Science Center.
Position Criteria
- Possess a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.
- Required to walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Be able to climb stairs, lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds.
- Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs.
- Ability to work outdoors for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions including hot temperatures and high humidity.
Schedule
- Hours for this position range from 35-39 hours/week.
- Training - Teacher Assistant Boot Camp is June 9 - 13.
- 2025 Summer camp dates are June 16 - August 8.
- Camps run from 9am until 3pm, Monday through Friday.
