What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bridge Carpenter position at The H&K Group?
The Structures Division of The H&K Group, Inc. is seeking a Bridge Carpenter to construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, adhering to local building codes. The Carpenter will support bridge and other structural projects throughout Northeast PA and the Lehigh Valley.

Responsibilities:
- Perform all work according to OSHA and H&K Safety policies.
- Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
- Select specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepare layout.
- Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials.
- Shape materials to prescribed measurements.
- Assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verify trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
- Erect framework for structures and lay subflooring.
- Build stairs and lay out and install partitions and cabinet work.
- Cover subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture and lay hardwood, parquet, ad wood-strip-block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
- Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, add finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
- Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent such as the GED from an accredited educational institution or 1 month of related experience and/or training.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem-solving.
- Ability to travel as required for projects.
- Ability to fit test & utilize appropriate PPE as needed.
- Ability to meet physical requirements (movement, lifting, as relevant to job).
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Frequently required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch or crawl, talk and hear, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally required to sit, lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration.
- Noise level is usually loud.
