HJF is seeking a Deputy Science Director to support the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH), a center of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, MD. The Deputy Science Director will serve as both an action officer and co-director to the Science Director. The incumbent will directly support the Joint Disaster Medicine and Public Health Ecosystem, which is a network of academic and industry partners that support NCDMPH and the federal interagency to conduct science, carry out operational research, and develop training and education for advancing the practice of medicine and public health in disasters. They will serve as Co-Principal Investigator and is responsible for independently conceiving and designing research projects of considerable complexity and difficulty. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Design and develop research in disaster medicine and public health, to include initiating funding opportunities. Assist in the execution of the Joint Disaster Medicine and Public Health Ecosystem.
NCDMPH was established under the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 (HSPD 21) in October 2007 to be “…an academic center of excellence in disaster medicine and public health….” The mission of the National Center is to improve the Nation’s disaster health readiness through education and science. NCDMPH is a unique organization with five Federal agency founding partners : Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). NCDMPH’s existence as a Federal organization, but located within an academic institution, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), positions it as a bridge between these spheres. The unique structure and position make NCDMPH especially suited to meet its critical readiness mission.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
Responsibilities : Action Officer :
- Lead the planning, execution, and oversight of research projects and protocols.
- Work with program staff to manage projects, track funding, and ensure appropriate administrative actions (e.g., institutional review board compliance).
- Vet funding opportunities for relevance, eligibility, and strategy alignment.
- Brainstorm with and enable program staff to partner strategically and maximize research and project opportunities, both scientifically and financially.
- Work with program staff and Ecosystem partners to ensure quality, cost, and timelines are maintained.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to technical staff.
- Coordinate and prepare new grant and funding applications.
- Makes major contributions to scientific literature and conferences.
- Prepare publication-ready manuscripts.
- Finalize reports and review for submission to scientific journals and patent applications.

Salary : $120,600 - $180,000
