Summary:
The Hershey Company Memphis plant is a Non-Union plant producing products such as Ice Breakers, Breath Savers, and Good & Plenty, in a high-speed complex environment.
Responsible for the management of the Sanitation Department. This includes supervision responsibility of all hourly Sanitation employees. This position is responsible for managing a superior quality, safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation through effectively leading and directing hourly sanitation employees to ensure compliance with established company and plant policies. This position is also responsible for scheduling work to meet production schedules with minimum downtime for cleaning requirements. The sanitation manager is also responsible for managing the sanitation budget/cost center. In this role the position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness within the plant to meet Pest Control requirements and GMP Compliance as required by The Hershey Company policies and all pertinent regulatory agencies. This role also has responsibilities for chemical compliance (QA representative on compliance team).
Responsibilities:
Leadership:
- Directs the activities of the Sanitation team to support the Business Units within the plant organization. The Sanitation manager provides direction to all hourly Sanitation and Sanitation leads. Provides leadership to all three shifts supporting 24/7 support to the manufacturing teams regarding sanitation requirements. Develops and executes training programs related to quality, sanitation, and regulatory issues. Leads preventative programs, process optimization efforts, problem solving and troubleshooting efforts for resolution of incidents needed sanitation support. Conducts manufacturing facility audits as appropriate to ensure and verify regulatory, customer, and internal compliance. Develops and maintains Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), Process Operating Guides for cleaning and the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) in support of The Hershey Company’s PEP program. There is also responsibility for overseeing the Environmental Micro Monitoring Program (providing guidance to program and developing CAPAs when needed. Conduct and/or be in involved in plant-wide Food Safety audits.
Administration:
- Manages the support to the Business Units regarding all aspects of the sanitation programs to include such activities as team development and performance. Selects, develops, and maintains a competent work team. Utilizes formal education resources, technical skills training, on-the-job skill development, staff planning and development, and other administrative activities as dictated by business needs. Manages the plant’s sanitation budget. Responsibility for chemical usage, Waste Management, and Pest Control. This includes managing contracts with vendors. Sanitation manager is the Plant QA delegate for Chemical Compliance team.
Policy Compliance:
- Assures full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Assures conformance to the policies and procedures of the corporation and the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)/Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards. Acts as a liaison between plant and corporate management regarding sanitation issues during incidents or crises involving the integrity of our product and services. Recommends to management the action required to efficiently resolve sanitation deviations and consequential adverse publicity related to incidents. Serves on multi-discipline corporate task teams as assigned by senior management. Participates and serves as a support function during inspections by governmental agencies. Motivation and Teamwork:
- Resolves employee relation issues by maintaining positive employee communications and relationships in union climate. Leads and develops employee involvement activities utilizing teams to reduce issues and to improve plant key performance indicators and to achieve corporate goals.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Lead regulatory compliance efforts, delegating testing, tracking, and reporting as necessary. Responsible for routine monitoring to ensure overall plant compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
Continuous Improvement
- Identifies continuous improvement opportunities related to ongoing food safety or food quality opportunities in processing areas and leads implementation. Leads improvement teams and prepares/presents reports. Leads initiatives to determine root cause and implement solutions. Provides training as needed. Implements new policies and procedures.
- This position works with the QRC COE SME to ensure that the facility implements global sanitation and cleaning standards for food processing equipment, including wet and dry cleaning methods to reduce/eliminate food safety/quality risks (e.g., microbial, allergen, non-GM, gluten free, sugar free, etc.) and associated verification and validation protocols.
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:
- Strong leadership skills and ability to influence all management levels, enabling the direction of activities of teams of employees that do not have direct reporting in this role.
- Knowledge of federal and state food industry regulations.
- Knowledge of and commitment to assuring regulatory compliance
- Strong Knowledge of sanitation and pest control practices
- Working Knowledge of Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and Safe Quality Foods (SQF) standards and the certification process
- Strong computer, document management skills and attention to detail
- Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written form

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- B.S. in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field or equivalent related experience.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of successful performance to progressively more responsible positions in Food Plant Sanitation and/or Food Quality.
