Stronger Communities New York (SCNY) is the parent organization that provides administrative support to both The House of the Good Shepherd and Together for Youth. This role is part of SCNY and can be based in either Utica, NY, or Canaan, NY. Depending on the location, the Director of Finance Operations will adhere to the policies, benefits, and compensation structures specific to either The House of the Good Shepherd (HGS) or Together for Youth (TFY), as outlined in the respective employee handbook.

Position Overview

Responsible for managing and overseeing Finance operations including overseeing general ledger, accounts payable and payroll.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, implementing, managing, and controlling the organization's financial operations. Help establish and implement annual financial goals; safeguard assets and ensure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls, and checks across all departments.
  • Administer, monitor, and review all financial activities to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, regulatory requirements and agency policies and procedures.
  • Regular supervision per agency schedules of direct reports that foster continual skill development and professional growth; direct, monitor and intervene as necessary with workflow/processes/schedules and making recommendations for other personnel actions including hiring, separations, additional support, promotions, and demotions.
  • Plan, recommend, implement, and direct productivity improvement and cost saving projects. Identify and maximize revenue sources and funding streams as well as expenditure savings opportunities. Ensure revenue and expenses are recorded accurately for reporting, funding and auditing.
  • Assist with internal/external audits, banks, lessors, casualty /liability insurance agents and vendors.
  • Oversee monthly cash reconciliation process, fixed asset schedules and balance sheet accounts.
  • Other related assignments as delegated by Finance Leadership.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and related functions (AP, AR, Fixed Assets)
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with system development and system evaluation. Ability to recommend areas in need of improvement.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, organizational, communication skills, including attention to detail, oral, and written communication skills, listening and training skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret changing legislation, technical procedures, and the ability to respond effectively to sensitive, confidential inquiries.

  • Ability to travel and attend work related functions as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Associates Degree in Accounting or related field with one to three years experience preferably in a mid-size non-profit organization
  • Significant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to work in a culturally and economically diverse population.
  • Ability to function as a team player.

Dexterity to write and operate standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones and calculators is required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds in an office setting.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
