HEAD LIFEGUARD JOB DESCRIPTION
The Head Lifeguard’s primary role is leading the Lifeguard team. This includes, but is not limited to training new hires, conducting In-Services, observing, and assisting the Lifeguards with their duties, conducting skills testing, organizing the rotations, ensuring that duties are completed, and records are maintained, reporting hazards and maintenance needs, scheduling and coaching of the Lifeguards. The Head Lifeguard works closely with the Aquatics Manager to ensure appropriate staffing, training, leadership, and coaching is taking place. A Head Lifeguard may also be asked to help train and lead the Pool Attendants. Head Lifeguards are required to attend all Lifeguard In-Services and Aquatics, Club and Company meetings. Lifeguards will be required to work holidays and all Aquatics related events. Memorial Day, Labor Day and Fourth of July holidays are mandatory.
Qualifications
To perform the duties of this position successfully, an employee is required to execute the essential functions of the job. Lifeguards are required to swim for physical conditioning and must practice lifesaving skills regularly. Employees in this position will be required to work in a very fast-paced and ever-changing environment where there is high volume of traffic. This position requires the individual to keep focused for an extended amount of time.
Physical Requirements
This position requires extended hours in an outdoor environment. Employees are responsible to take appropriate safety precautions to protect themselves from the elements. This position requires the moving of pool furniture, hauling equipment used for classes, and lifting boxes or other items located inside the pool areas weighting up to 50 lb. Other related tasks might be performed as necessary to accomplish operational goals.

Qualifications
- Current Lifeguard Instructor, CPR and First Aid Certification. Will be required to audition to show skills are strong and up to date
- Must be a minimum age of 17
- Previous experience managing Lifeguards and scheduling staff, or, must have worked a minimum of 3 months (currently) as a member of The Houstonian Lifeguarding staff.
- Speaks English fluently
- Confidence to coach peers, enforce rules and adhere to procedures
- Positive and friendly attitude
- Prior customer service experience preferred
- Eye for cleanliness and detail.
- Ensures the pools are appropriately guarded and there is constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons and staff in the event of emergency.
- Ensures the Lifeguards are prepared to provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
- Ensures Lifeguards are consistent with customer service and enforce the rules and provides service to both the members and staff with genuine care.
- Always presents a professional appearance and positive attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service. Sets a good example for the staff.
- Ensures that inspection reports, logs, various maintenance duties are completed to keep the facility clean and safe.
- Ensure appropriate procedures are followed.
- Ensures that scheduling is appropriate for the business levels, Lifeguards are on time and perform their duties to standard. Is responsible for resolving issues and finding substitutes if needed.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Guard the pools, prevent hazardous behavior, inspect the pool areas for problems and potential hazards, and respond with appropriate care during emergencies.
- Follow proper procedures for pool closures.
- Make sure loaner items are available to members; pick them up from the pool decks as needed.
- Clean furniture and decks as necessary.
- Meet and greet members, assist with finding seating, getting towels, swim gear…etc.
- Walk continuously around the pools to check to see if service is needed or any area needs straightening or cleaning.
- Make sure the Pool House office and storage areas are always neat and clean.
- Report potential problems and hazards to the Aquatics Manager and Aquatics Director immediately.
- Check the restrooms to ensure they are clean and always supplied.
- Test and record water chemistry on a prescribed schedule.
- Contribute to the overall security of the pool area and safety of the members by reporting any unusual or suspicious behavior.
- Will be required to work at events (even on holidays), assist the Aquatics Manager in conducting In-service meetings. Knowledge of all Lifeguard duties and expectations. Meets and enforces those standards.
