What are the responsibilities and job description for the Material Return Second Shift Operator/Technician position at The Industrial Commons?
Overview:
The Operator/Technician is responsible for carrying out the preparation of raw fibers and materials for the full cycle of yarn production, while ensuring quality and consistency throughout each stage of the process. This role requires the technician to operate, monitor, troubleshoot all machines, ensure that materials are handled properly, and procedures are carried out accurately to achieve precise results. The Operator/Technician will have a strong understanding of fibers and the disciplines surrounding yarn production, which will serve as the foundation for production-based teamwork, ability to collaborate and improve processes, all while maintaining high standards. This position will report directly to the Director of R&D and Production and stay in communication with the administrative team on raw material orders. This is a full time, non-exempt, second shift hourly position requiring 40 hours on-site. The start of the position will have a portion of the daily schedule overlap with the end of the first shift hours for training purposes. After the completion of training, the position schedule will lapse into standard second shift hours.

Primary Function:
The Operator/Technician prepares raw fibers and materials for yarn production while ensuring quality control and consistency in addition to other required tasks in the Material Return warehouse.
Essential Functions:
Opening Room Procedures - 70%
- Maintaining, tracking, and reporting on the production needs for all opening room scheduling.
- Equipment operation and technical set up for production.
- Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Tracking and reporting on supply of raw materials for production, communication with management about raw material ordering schedules.
- Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedure for all equipment and production.
- Create, organize and maintain testing notes for all production and R&D trials.
- Maintain cleanliness of all equipment and opening room area.
Warehouse Coordination - 15%
- Maintain and produce bales.
- Assist Warehouse and Logistics Manager with logistics for shipping bales.
- Set up, production, and shipping of nets.
- Assist with loading and unloading trucks for shipping and receiving of material.
- Assist in organization and cleaning of the warehouse.
Spinning Operation - 15%
- Operate and maintain spinning equipment for high quality production.
- Track raw material between spinning and carding.
- Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Create and maintain SOP for all equipment and production.
- Create, organize and maintain testing notes for all production and R&D trials.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of manufacturing experience preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in operating production and warehouse equipment preferred.
- Multitasking Skills: Ability to multitask, managing multiple different processes at the same time including being able to maintain an operating machine while conducting other tasks as needed for efficiency of time and adaptability to new tasks.
- Organization Skills: Ability to maintain an organized, clean working environment in order to ensure safety, OSHA compliance, appearance of a professional setting and maintenance of equipment and tools. Includes an ability to organize raw materials and system data.
- Accurate record-keeping: Ability to document information accurately, including maintaining records of production trials, standard operating procedures, and daily tasks. This may be done through written, electronic, or other accessible formats as appropriate.
- Time Management Skills: Ability to maintain and meet schedules and deadlines for production runs and regular production schedules.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and focus on process improvement to ensure accuracy, precision, and quality in both existing and new projects, while continuously meeting or exceeding quality standards.
- Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing technologies and procedures, ensuring continuous improvement and efficiency. This includes the ability to understand and apply new knowledge, skills, procedures, or technologies relevant to the position. Position may require attainment of certifications and other training.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to lift and carry items from 5-50 pounds as required for loading and unloading materials, with reasonable accommodations available.
- Ability to move about both office and warehouse settings to access machinery, products, and to communicate with staff.
- Ability to ascend a ladder or stairs as well as operate a forklift to access storage areas or inspect equipment.
- Ability to access and handle materials and equipment located on the warehouse floor.
- Ability to withstand exposure to varying temperatures and humidity levels within a warehouse environment.
- Ability to observe details within material and machinery.
- Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment; training and accommodations are available.
- Exposure to moderate to high noise levels from machinery and equipment in the warehouse; PPE provided.
