About International School of Indiana Athletics: The International School of Indiana (ISI), with approximately 545 students, is an independent non-profit preschool through Grade 12 institution established in 1994 by business and civic leaders to play a vital role in Indiana’s increasingly global business community by supporting the recruitment of top international professional talent and promoting the value of internationalism. ISI is the state’s only school offering all enrolled students access to certified full-continuum International Baccalaureate (IB) programming, language immersion, and dual language learning in Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Approximately half of the school’s students receive some form of financial aid, and philanthropic support is essential for fulfilling the school’s mission to provide its students with a world-class education that prepares them to be responsible citizens and effective leaders in a rapidly globalizing and interdependent world.
Growing the Gryphons Athletics program is a strategic and philanthropic priority for the school. Approximately 60% of grades 5 through 12 students participate in the program. Sports offered at ISI include basketball, cross country, dance team, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. The school’s vision for Athletics is to further strengthen the program focused on the holistic development of student-athletes, providing a comprehensive approach to athletic growth, performance development, skill enhancement, leadership, and collaborative teamwork beginning in Lower School and continuing in Middle School, and at the Junior Varsity and Varsity High School levels. ISI aims to cultivate not only academic and athletic development but also a lifelong joy for collective sports that involve community members, regardless of their background or athletic experience, who can contribute to ISI’s athletic culture, pride, and traditions.
Duties/Responsibilities:The Athletics Director is responsible for further strengthening the Athletics program focused on the holistic development of student-athletes, providing a comprehensive approach to athletic growth, performance development, skill enhancement, leadership, and collaborative teamwork beginning in Lower School and continuing in Middle School, and at the Junior Varsity and Varsity High School levels.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees all athletic department staff and coaches for grades 5 to 12, including hiring, training, evaluation, and professional development in alignment with school policies.
- Directly supervises the part-time Assistant Athletic Director, delegating key responsibilities such as grounds maintenance, scorekeeping, and other administrative tasks.
- Supervises event staff and manages logistics for game-day personnel, including officials, medical staff, and security.
Leadership & Vision:
- Implement a comprehensive athletic program for Grades 5 through 12 that aligns with the school’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Provide strategic direction for athletic programs, emphasizing performance development, skill enhancement, leadership, and collaborative teamwork.
- Inspire an athletics culture that includes common values, core attitudes, beliefs, and standards for athletes, coaches, and the community as a whole, reflecting values such as responsibility, self-discipline, self-respect, confidence, pride in progress, sportsmanship, and commitment to academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
- Serve as a contributing and active member of the Lower School, Upper School, and Administrative teams.
Program Management & Development:
- Oversee all aspects of ISI athletics, including varsity, junior varsity, and middle school sports.
- Select and assign Assistant Athletics Director, athletic coaches, and staff members with the Principal's approval.
- Orient all coaches regarding their roles and responsibilities to students, the school staff, parents, and the community.
- Provide or coordinate training workshops for coaches in their respective sports and conduct evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with all Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) regulations and other governing bodies.
- Develop and implement appropriate school and IHSAA rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities, participants, and observers.
- Maintain current school athletic policy handbooks and sports rules.
- Maintain high standards for athletic facilities, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Work with academic leadership to support student-athlete academic success and eligibility.
- Assist with the high school college counseling program in seeking athletic scholarships and in planning post-high school experiences for student athletes.
- Administer summer athletic activities, including conditioning and camps, in adherence to IHSAA moratoriums.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Serve as the primary representative of the athletic department by effectively communicating with students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni.
- Engage with the broader Central Indiana athletics community to enhance the perception and reach of ISI athletics.
- Promote and foster positive school-community relations by ensuring the community is informed and responsive to the athletic program through preparing news/information releases with the school’s communication team and meeting with various interest groups.
- Coordinate with the Vice President of Advancement and External Relations regarding decisions about booster groups, parents, and community volunteers involved in athletic functions at the school.
Administrative Operations & Budget Management:
- Administer the school’s athletic budget and expenditure plan while maintaining complete and accurate financial records in accordance with school rules and regulations.
- Maintain a current inventory of athletic supplies, uniforms, and equipment.
- Supervise the maintenance of athletics grounds and facilities. Schedule and direct the use of athletic facilities, fields, and equipment. Coordinate with appropriate personnel regarding the use of facilities to ensure proper maintenance and preparation for athletic and instructional purposes.
- Partner with the Advancement Office to support annual and capital fundraising campaigns, sponsorships, and facility enhancements.
- Collaborate with the Communications Office to ensure Gryphon Athletics' visual identity, professionalism, and overall image align with the school.
- Maintain the athletic calendar (practice and game schedules), team rosters, coaching information, and registration, ensuring athletes, families, and the school community are well informed in coordination with the school’s communication team.
- Oversee scheduling, travel logistics, and event coordination for all athletics events.
- Coordinate the provision of game support services, such as officials, team physicians, and police officers; assumes general responsibility for the proper supervision of home games and serves as tournament director when conducting state tournaments.
- Maintain necessary scoring reports and records, and complete required paperwork in a specified time and manner while ensuring that proper forms (insurance, attendance, medical, etc.) are obtained and current for program participants.
- Organize, conduct, and supervise all athletic awards programs.
- Duties may be assigned, modified, or removed as necessary.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Philosophy of athletic administration
- Code of ethics and sportsmanship
- Principles of budgeting, crowd management, fundraising, health and safety, sports medicine, record keeping, school-community relations, and public relations with Booster clubs and other organizations
- Rules and regulations of the appropriate interscholastic league, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHSA)
- Pertinent federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies, and administrative procedures
- Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate a school athletic program
- Deal tactfully and work effectively with a variety of individuals and groups
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Operate computers, apps, scoreboards, sound systems, and other equipment and machines related to Athletics
- Availability for evenings and weekend events and activities
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in education, sports/athletic administration, or physical education from an accredited college or university.
- NIAAA(National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association)/IIAAA(Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) Certification, and First Aid/CPR/AED training are desired, but not required.
