Our Mission
The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two sites, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.
The Opportunity
The J Paul Getty Museum seeks an experienced Machinist specialized in the design and fabrication of exhibition display cases and pedestals. Reporting to the Lead Preparator, the successful candidate will apply specialized skills to the design and fabrication of metal, plastic, and wood exhibition display cases and pedestals in specification to the Getty Museum's design and fabrication standards. They work closely with preparators, designers, conservators and other staff, vendors and consultants to ensure the quality and timely delivery of these items. They also ensure the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment used in the trade and will train and oversee staff using those tools and equipment in the workshop. They advise on material selection and fabrication methods and procedures in alignment with Getty Museum's design and fabrication standards. Works closely with supervisor on safety policies and procedures.
The Museum's Exhibitions Division comprises four Departments: Exhibitions Coordination; Registration; Design and Preparations. The Division's mission is to realize ambitious, impactful exhibitions, including tours and special projects, and successful gallery installations, working collaboratively to ensure excellence and creativity in scholarship, design, display, and interpretation, supported through disciplined budget management and systematic planning.
- May design and fabricate tools, molds, forms, cabinet and showcase hardware, storage cabinets, scientific apparatus components, mounts and other metal or plastic devises
- May design and fabricate storage cabinets, tables, showcases, work benches and other display, storage and working furniture
- Works with preparators, other Museum and Getty staff, outside vendors and consultants on fabrication projects
- Assists lead preparator in establishing fabrication project priorities, developing project schedules, and fabricating projects
- Researches and recommends or orders materials, supplies and equipment
- Maintain metal fabrication shop to ensure safe work. environments
- Sets up, maintains and keeps inventory of shop tools and machinery
- Supervise other staff on safe operation of all tools and equipment within the metal shop
- Other duties, as assigned.
- High School/GED with certification from a technical/trade school desirable
- Apprenticeship plus 5 years custom machining or woodworking experience
- Proficient in hand and machine tool operations plus CAD and CAM
- Ability to read blueprints
- Skilled in the fabrication of case goods
- Skilled in the fabrication of radius and angled work
- Knowledge of basic construction and cutting
- Skilled in the installation of case work
- Skilled with woodworking equipment
- Skilled in advanced metal working equipment
- Ability to resolve construction issues and problem solve during fabrication and installation
- Skilled in metal and plastic fabrication
