PHYSICAL CONDITIONING DEPARTMENT ____________________________________
The Physical Conditioning Department at JLA is similar to physical education departments at other schools but with a different design and focus, thus the unique title. If the body is healthy, the mind can flourish. Students will learn of the benefits of eating a nutritional diet, living an active lifestyle, and developing healthy habits. Activities such as basketball, dance, soccer, and volleyball will provide fun, fast-paced opportunities to learn about various sports and creative expressions. Disciplines such as yoga, martial arts, and self-defense will connect body and mind. Physical training with proper stretching techniques before and after workouts, in weight training, and with cardiovascular conditioning will educate students about their active bodies through safe and developmentally appropriate lessons. As a daily subject, Physical Conditioning ensures the health of the body along with the mind and spirit.
For the 2025-2026 school year, we are seeking candidates who can teach the ninth-grade Health course and Physical Conditioning classes for both middle school and high school students. Preferred candidates will have coaching experience and will want to coach extra-curricular competitive sports in at least two seasons. Sports that have coaching vacancies for head and assistant positions include basketball, cross country, flag football, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Stipends for coaching each sport will be paid in addition to the salary for teaching.
RESPONSIBILITIES _________________________________________________________
Full-time employment for faculty teaching positions will commence in August 2025. Responsibilities will include :
- 20 teaching periods per week (5 periods daily M-Th)
- Advisory, media-literacy, research, service learning, or mentorship role as part of our unique Friday schedule
- Robust professional development throughout the year
- Special onboarding and leadership programming with students for the first 3 weeks of the school year
- Coaching at least one extra-curricular sports team
QUALIFICATIONS _________________________________________________________
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the middle / upper school level, as well as a strong foundation in classroom pedagogy. He / She must have an undergraduate degree in a related field, though advanced degrees are preferred. Experience working with gifted and talented students is an asset.
