What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician position at The John H. Boner Community Center Inc?
Are you ready to take on a challenging but rewarding role in maintaining essential spaces for our community? The John H. Boner Community Center (JBNC) is searching for a dedicated and resilient Maintenance Technician to tackle a wide array of responsibilities across our diverse portfolio of properties. From commercial buildings and community spaces to multifamily units, this position is integral to ensuring our facilities remain functional, safe, and welcoming—even in the face of tough conditions.
What You Can Expect
Working at JBNC means embracing a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. This role requires a hands-on approach to maintaining and improving our properties, which include:
- Newest Building: A high-maintenance facility that faces unique challenges such as significant safety concerns and an active, sometimes volatile, environment.
- Community and Residential Spaces: From our corporate office and Legacy Center to New Life Manor and Union Apartments, you’ll oversee upkeep for HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and more.
- Commercial Properties: Including the Tebo Building, Republic Building, Art Hub, and others, all requiring regular maintenance and tenant support.
Core Responsibilities
This position encompasses a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Facility Maintenance: Performing unit turns, addressing work orders, and handling HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general repairs. You’ll also maintain water softener systems, commercial appliances, and company vehicles.
- Groundskeeping: Mowing lawns, landscaping, removing snow, salting walkways, and maintaining the cleanliness of parking lots and outdoor spaces.
- Safety and Emergency Response: Being on-call 24/7 for emergencies, such as snow removal or facility repairs, and addressing incidents in high-stress environments.
- Event Support: Setting up and tearing down classrooms, meeting rooms, and community spaces for various events.
A Day in the Life
Start your day by reviewing work orders and attending a brief team meeting to prioritize tasks. Your morning might include responding to maintenance requests such as fixing a resident’s plumbing issue or repairing a classroom’s HVAC system. By midday, you’re assisting with a room setup for an evening community event while supervising Community Service workers on a groundskeeping project. Later, you head to Union Apartments to address a broken elevator and complete safety checks on other facilities. Before clocking out, you inspect equipment and update records to ensure readiness for tomorrow.
Challenges You Will Face
This is not a typical maintenance role. You’ll often work independently with minimal supervision, tackling:
- Occasional adverse interactions with professionalism.
- Emergency situations, including urgent repairs and adverse weather conditions.
- Complex logistical demands, such as managing supplies across multiple locations and transporting items using JBNC vehicles.
Qualifications
You will thrive in this position if you have:
- At least 1 year of professional maintenance experience.
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- The ability to work independently, solve problems proactively, and manage time effectively.
- Physical stamina to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation.
Why Join JBNC?
This is more than just a job—it’s an opportunity to make a tangible impact in our community. By ensuring our facilities remain functional and welcoming, you’ll contribute to the success of programs that uplift our residents and neighbors.
