Associate General Counsel, Litigation & Contested Matters

The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel at Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Litigation & Contested Matters. Working with the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and the Practice Group Leader for the Litigation & Contested Matters Practice Group, the AGC will be responsible for the assessment, strategic development, and case management of litigation involving the University. The AGC will develop and oversee litigation processes including legal hold management, discovery, motions practice, arbitration, and trials. Additionally, the Associate General Counsel will select and manage outside counsel.

The Associate General Counsel will manage all aspects of disputes involving JHU, including demand letters, claims, and law suits. Examples include litigating: employment discrimination and wage and hour claims filed with government agencies; personal injury claims; breach of contract claims (including grant awards and sponsored research); discrimination claims including Title VII, Title IX, and Title VI claims, and labor arbitrations. Working closely with clients and colleagues in other practice groups, the Associate General Counsel will advise regarding risk to the University, including supervising outside counsel, negotiating settlements, and consulting with Risk Management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor.
  • Five years of legal experience required.
  • Attorney Admission in good standing to the Maryland Bar, or ability to obtain admission within one year.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing all phases of litigation and contested matters is strongly preferred.
  • Experience providing legal counsel to an institution of higher education, and one associated with an academic medical center in particular, is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a highly complex organization.
  • Superb professional judgment and high ethical standards.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage a high volume of work and multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with senior university leadership, including executives and faculty leadership.

Starting Salary Range: $135,900 - $238,400 Annually (Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
