Solo practitioner specializing in appellate criminal defense is seeking a highly motivated individual looking for an opportunity to grow with the firm. In this role, you will handle a wide variety of tasks, including:
- Maintaining accurate client records
- Remaining up to date on court rules/procedures
- Completing initial intake interviews
- Drafting legal correspondence and pleadings, such as legal memorandum, motions, records requests, engagement/disengagement letters
- Legal research
- Calendar management, noting filing deadlines, court appearances, meetings, and other important deadlines
- Reviewing, indexing, organizing, analyzing, and summarizing discovery and case history
- Redaction of legal documents
- Proofreading briefs and other legal documents for spelling, syntax, consistency, and factual integrity
- Preparing table of contents and table of authorities for legal pleadings
- Assisting clients by phone and email
- Scheduling attorney-client legal calls
- Various administrative and paralegal tasks
This role requires:
- Paralegal certificate, at least one year of law office experience, or a college degree – Those with an English or other writing-intensive degree who are interested in criminal law are encouraged to apply.
- Strong reading and writing skills – This will consume a large portion of the job.
- A background check – a criminal history does not automatically bar employment
- Professional and/or educational references
- Commitment to respectfully and diligently working on behalf of incarcerated individuals
- Attention to detail, ability to review work for accuracy, and to spot errors and typos before submission
- Ability to work diligently without supervision
This is a part-time hybrid remote position, with a 25-hour work week. The position requires a consistent schedule, however there is flexibility as to the set hours. Following an initial training, this position will be remote, with required weekly in-person meetings in Liberty.
Pay for this position begins at $20/hour, with a substantial increase for those with relevant experience. For those with more limited experience, there will be increases based on performance and acquired skills.
