Background

The Carol H. Pitchersky Development Fellowship was established to honor Carol H. Pitchersky, a social justice fundraising pioneer who had a vision to expand the fundraising capacity of the nation’s social justice community and to increase diversity in the development profession. This 2-year appointment provides experience with various facets of fundraising conducted by the organizations. During the fellowship term, the Fellow will be introduced to the programmatic and administrative elements of social justice nonprofit landscape through collaboration with the program, policy, and operations staff and with the senior leadership of The Education Fund and The Leadership Conference.

About The Role

We seek a Development Fellow to join our Development Department. The ideal candidate will contribute to the specific coordination of projects related to fundraising for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations (including funder research, proposal development, grants management, and reporting), deepen their knowledge and understanding of the social justice community, and build relationships with program staff to support the organizations’ core issue areas. The fellow will also have the opportunity to work closely with their supervisor, Director, Development, to complete various projects according to the unique strengths and interests, as well as identified needs of the department/organizations to build a portfolio of experience for future opportunities in development.

Eligible candidates are young professionals of color with a demonstrated commitment to civil and human rights as demonstrated through course of study and work experience. The Fellow must demonstrate an interest in a fundraising career in the social justice space. This opportunity should be utilized as a vehicle for career advancement in development, not a side-step into program or policy work.

The Fellowship Is Not Only An Opportunity To Make Meaningful Contributions To The Organization And The Development Program, But To Receive Training In Fundraising Tactics And Best Practices And Benefit From Comprehensive Professional Development

  • Access to an annual staff professional development stipend to further expand learning and development.
  • Participate in staff-wide trainings and brown bags to further develop interpersonal and technical skills and learn from subject matter experts on organizations’ priority issue areas.
  • Resume, cover letter and job interview support in second year of fellowship to support a strong transition from Fellowship to the broader development field.
  • The Leadership Conference also holds regular meetings to deep dive into program and policy areas, daily news briefings, and periodic interviews with the CEO, providing employees with regular opportunities to learn more about the field of civil and human rights.

This position will report to the Director, Development. This position is part of the collective bargaining unit.

What You Will Do

Stewardship and Donor Engagement (40%)

  • Draft initial grant-related materials of core issues areas, including but not limited to letters of inquiries, concept papers, proposals, reports and other writing when requested.
  • Create detailed donor research profiles for current and prospective donors to brief and provide talking points for development, programmatic staff, and executive leadership in advance of meetings.
  • Process award letters and incoming donations to ensure accurate grant tracking, record keeping and accounting.

Prospecting (30%)

  • Project Management of prospect pipeline
  • Work with Development staff to maintain CRM integrity and run prospecting/pipeline-related reports.
  • Maintain an up to date understanding of grantmaking trends and the general universe of national and community funders that address social justice.

Team Support (30%)

  • Draft briefing sheets for meetings for development and executive leadership staff with existing funding partners and prospective donors.
  • Provide staffing and planning and logistics support as needed for special events.
  • Track and record donor related correspondence and outreach in SharePoint, Raisers Edge and Monday.com.
  • Supportmeetings among The Leadership Conference programmatic staff to produce summaries, materials for concept papers, proposals and reports.
  • Work closely with the department to ensure timely and accurate processing of pledges, grant agreements, completion of incoming fund forms, and recordkeeping in systems.
  • Support general administrative functions for the development team when additional capacity is needed.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of The Education Fund and The Leadership Conference program areas to develop accurate and comprehensive program summaries.

What You Will Bring

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of work, volunteer, or student leadership experience.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of The Leadership Conference and The Education Fund.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and to multitask.
  • Strong writing, communication, and project management skills and an attention to detail.
  • The ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and to handle complex and competing priorities.

Salary Range - $58,400 - $66,500, dependent on years of related experience

Telework Policy

Staff may work from the office or remotely until March 1, 2025, which is when our updated telework policy will take effect. The policy will be implemented in three phases.

The first phase begins March 1, 2025; staff members will be required to work in-person from the office at least two days per month. The second phase begins September 2, 2025; staff members will be required to work in-person from the office at least one day per week. The final phase begins January 1, 2026; staff members will be required to work in-person from the office at least two days per week.

All positions are subject to the telework policy summarized above. (A more detailed description of the telework policy – to include how in-office workdays are to be scheduled – is available upon request from People & Culture.)

Please note staff members are exempt from working in-person if they have received medical accommodation or their position is designated as temporarily or permanently remote.
