Position Overview
The School Counselor at The Leadership School plays a critical role in fostering a restorative, student-centered culture that supports the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of students. This position involves working closely with students, teachers, families, and school leadership to ensure that every student has access to the support they need to thrive.
Key Responsibilities 1. Student Support & Counseling- Provide individual and group counseling to address students' academic, social, and emotional needs.
- Use restorative practices to mediate conflicts and build a culture of healing, accountability, and growth.
- Develop and implement intervention plans for students requiring additional support.
- Conduct classroom lessons on topics such as social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, and personal responsibility.
- Develop and implement a Crisis Prevention Plan to support students in distress.
- Serve as the first point of contact for students experiencing crises, including emotional distress, self-harm, or safety concerns.
- Work with school leadership and external agencies to assess and respond to threats to student safety.
- Train staff on de-escalation strategies, trauma-informed responses, and emergency protocols.
- Lead the school's Suicide Prevention and Intervention efforts, ensuring students receive timely and appropriate care.
- Lead restorative circles and mediations to address student conflicts.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to implement proactive behavior support plans.
- Work with the Dean of Culture and student support team to track and analyze behavior trends.
- Build strong relationships with families to support student well-being.
- Serve as a key liaison between the school and community mental health organizations.
- Conduct parent workshops on topics like social-emotional development, discipline strategies, and mental health awareness.
- Support teachers and staff in implementing trauma-informed and restorative practices.
- Participate in Care Team meetings to develop intervention strategies for students.
- Provide professional development for teachers on supporting students’ emotional needs.
- Maintain accurate records of counseling services, interventions, and crisis responses.
- Support SPEDCoordinator students with 504 Plans and IEPs by collaborating with special education teams.
- Ensure compliance with state and district policies related to school counseling and student support.
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
- State certification/licensure as a school counselor (or eligibility to obtain).
- Experience working in elementary or K-8 settings.
- Strong understanding of restorative practices, trauma-informed care, and SEL.
- Experience in crisis prevention, de-escalation, and suicide intervention.
- Ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Commitment to educational equity and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
