Job Summary
The MMSD Counseling & Transitions Coordinator position provides strategic leadership and oversight to ensure secondary students in the Madison Metropolitan School District receive comprehensive counseling services that prepare them for a successful transition to high school. This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of academic success, social-emotional well-being, and college and career readiness.

Key Responsibilities :
- Leadership and Program Oversight :
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of secondary counseling services across the district, ensuring alignment with district goals and best practices.
Oversee programs and initiatives that support students' middle school, high school, and postsecondary transitions, including academic advising, career exploration, and social-emotional learning.Provide leadership and guidance to school counselors, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in the delivery of services.College and Career Readiness :Design and lead district-wide initiatives to embed college and career readiness into the middle school curriculum and counseling programs.
Collaborate with schools to provide students with opportunities for career exploration, goal setting, and early college awareness.Support schools to implement research-informed best practices that connect social-emotional learning supports, student engagement strategies, and academic interventions to promote a holistic understanding of college and career readiness for secondary students.Support and Advocacy :Advocate for equitable access to high-quality counseling services and college and career readiness programs for all secondary students, with an emphasis on supporting underserved populations.
Provide professional development and resources to school counselors and educators on topics related to middle school counseling, high school transition, and college and career readiness.Collaboration and Communication :Foster strong partnerships with middle and high school administrators, teachers, counselors, and external stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of counseling and transition programs.
Communicate regularly with district leadership, school staff, and families to share updates, best practices, and success stories.Use data to monitor program effectiveness and make informed decisions about program improvements.Collaborate with central office teams and community partners to support middle school transitions and college and career readiness.Job Description - Primary Objectives and Actions
Objective 1 : Engage the school counseling team in professional capacity building through the provision of professional learning opportunities, coaching, consultation, and mentoring.
Actions :
Annually develop, with the support of the Counseling Teacher Leader, the scope and sequence for school counselor professional learning. Plan and facilitate monthly professional development sessions for middle school and high school teams. Engage speakers, prepare materials and resources, and plan processes to ensure high-quality learning experiences.Provide coaching and consultation to support counselors in aligning their work with MMSD's comprehensive school counseling program core practices.Create structures and systems that support collaboration, sharing of resources, identification of "best practices," and program alignment.Identify relevant information from district, state, and national resources and provide updates to school counselors via email, newsletter, professional learning sessions, and coaching / mentoring support.Stay informed about district-level changes that impact practices related to academic advising, post-secondary readiness, and social-emotional support, and share relevant information through professional learning and coaching structures.Delineate and communicate expectations, with the support of the Counseling Teacher Leader in determining the role of school counselors in the ACP processSecondary School Counseling Procedures Manual refinement and revision.Objective 2 : Support school counselors to be engaged and effective members of school-based student services teams.

Collaborate with Student Services Team CoachesCoaching regarding Educator Effectiveness processesCollaborate with the Counseling Teacher Leader to support counselors' understanding of the comprehensive counseling model and work with their student services teams to build and deliverRespond to school support requests, as appropriateObjective 3 : Develop systems, structures, and resources to support professional capacity building for new (and pre-) professionals.
Actions :
Assist in the recruitment and hiring of new school counselors.Provide regular mentoring sessions for first-year school counselors. (Develop mentoring scope and sequence in collaboration with other school support leads and the Counseling Teacher Leader) :Coaching new-to-district counselorsDeveloping practicum / internship guidelines and processes for interested practicum students & school-based school counseling supervisorsObjective 4 : Collaborate with district-level colleagues to develop and continuously improve systems to support comprehensive school counseling best practices
Actions :
Participate in cross-functional teams and workgroups to support middle schools to develop effective teaming practices for student service teams.Collaborate with district-level staff to provide resources, professional learning, and guidance to middle school staff.Minimum Training and Experience :
Master's Degree in School Counseling, Education, or a related field.Hold DPI license 7054 - School CounselorFive years of school counseling experience with a focus on middle school studentsPreferred Qualifications :
Experience in an urban school district or similar setting.Knowledge of data analysis and using data to drive program improvements.Experience in designing and delivering professional development for educators.
