Safety Manager

The Mariners' Museum
The Mariners' Museum Salary
Newport, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 1/31/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/31/2025
Description:

The Mariners’ Museum and Park is actively hiring a Safety Manager to join our Team. The Mariners’ Museum and Park has been recognized as a Hampton Roads Top Workplace for the last five consecutive years. That recognition reflects, in part, the high level of commitment that our Team feels toward serving our local, national, and global communities, as our Mission calls us to do. We are a passionate Team striving for excellence in all that we do. We also learn a lot from one another about the Museum and its world-class collections, about the Park and its “living collection” (the forest, lake, and wildlife in our Park), and about the communities we serve. The Safety Manager will be a full partner and leader on our Team.

This is a new role at The Mariners’ Museum and Park, so there are some exciting opportunities for the successful candidate to shape the nature and impact of the role. Specifically,

  • The Mariners’ Park is 550-acres with the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake within it, all along the James River Shoreline. A newly-established and growing Park Department is responsible for forest, landscape, and water quality management and for engaging guests from the community on our trails, in our fields, and on the Mariners’ Lake. Safety is paramount throughout these stewardship and engagement activities.
  • The Mariners’ Museum falls within over 295,000 square feet of roofline, and is home to over 90,000 square feet of public gallery space and tens of thousands of square feet of industrial and lab spaces. Multiple departments are responsible for the stewardship of millions of collections items that range from small paper archival pieces and photo negatives to the 115-ton revolving turret from the USS MONITOR, and guests ranging from infants and toddlers through adults with a full spectrum of different abilities engage with our Team, one another, and our collection within our built environment. Again, safety is paramount throughout these stewardship and engagement activities.
  • Working with the CEO and the Human Resources Manager, the Safety Manager has a “blank slate” opportunity to build a gold standard Mariners’ Safety Program and culture. The Safety Manager will oversee our existing Protection Services Department that contains our nascent Park Ranger Team, but may reorganize those teams and functions to fit the vision for what this enhanced safety program can be. There is the potential, over time and as the safety program develops, to add other functions, such as an industrial hygienist, given the industrial nature of some of our operations.

The Mariners' Museum and Park offers an excellent benefits package to include paid sick leave and vacation, generous health insurance contributions, and a 403b retirement match. The salary for the Safety Manager is dependent on the successful candidate’s experience and potential, but the minimum of the potential range is $75,000.

Duties:

This person reports to the CEO and develops, manages, supervises, monitors, and facilitates the Mariners’ safety and security policies and programs both within Museum and Park. The Safety Manager is more than a compliance officer - the Safety Manager is a leader who:

  • In collaboration with leaders across the organization, fosters a culture of safety built around servant leadership principles with a focus on the safety and wellbeing of the members of our Mariners’ Team and guests within both the Museum and Park
  • Advises leadership on safety regulatory requirements and practices and acts as the liaison between regulatory bodies regarding safety policies and procedures
  • Maintains, updates, and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and practices and develops internal safety policies and procedures to that end
  • In collaboration with leaders across the organization, proactively identifies, develops, and implements process improvements to support an incident-free workplace
  • Develops, implements, and oversees general safety training for the Mariners’ Team, including volunteers, and oversees specialized Team training where needed and required
  • Develops and implements, in collaboration with leaders across the organization, a safety inspection program
  • In collaboration with leaders across the organization, mitigates potential safety risks
  • Develops, implements, and oversees incident response procedures like fire, active shooter, etc., and trains our Mariners’ Team, including volunteers
  • Ensures proper records are maintained and reviews and reports issued
  • Oversees campus security, fire, and other systems, and operates as the liaison between public safety officials and organizations, and other security partners and vendors
  • Plays an integral role, in collaboration with leaders across the organization, in collections security and disaster response
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

The person who will succeed in this role will be able to:

  • exercise good judgment,
  • pay close attention to detail,
  • take the initiative when appropriate,
  • thrive in a fast-paced, complex environment, and
  • internalize the culture of respect, empathy, and servant leadership that our Team is building.

This opportunity sets up particularly well for an ambitious safety professional bringing their growth mindset to their first Safety Manager role OR a successful, seasoned Safety Manager seeking an opportunity to build a program within a mission-driven organization.

  • Must be a strategic thinker and proactive problem solver with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be well-organized, have excellent time management skills, and can multitask.
  • Must maintain professionalism and strict confidentiality with all materials and exercise discretion.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen prior to employment.

No phone calls, please – only applicants being considered for interviews will be contacted.
