What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cultural Heritage Specialist position at The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission?
Example duties and responsibilities for the position include:
Conduct and compile research for relevant topics – Indigenous history, Indigenous use of soapstone resources, Agricultural and Civil War history in western Montgomery County
Design and implement interpretive materials for on-site programs (but not responsible for delivery of programs) – i.e., self guided tours, brochures, or similar
Develop teacher and student modules related to above topics, for use in classrooms by teachers
Ability to prioritize work program tasks, develop appropriate schedules, and meet internal deadlines
Coordinate with CRSS team and other subject matter experts for contributions, review, and completion of products
Develop relationships with local schools to build connections to the parks
Required experience:
Undergraduate degree in Education, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field is required. Applicants need to have experience creating public outreach materials, including for K-12 audiences, conducting and compiling research, and have knowledge of Maryland history up to 12,000 years ago. Applicants must have excellent communication and organizational skills and be able to work independently. The successful candidate will have experience with history and archaeology content research and development, be willing and able to work with a wide range of staff and public, engage with topics of cultural heritage and work well as part of a team. The position will work out of Needwood Mansion in Derwood, MD.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and previous experience with research, and writing on topics of Montgomery County history, archaeology, Indigenous history.
Significant experience developing successful educational products for use on site and in classrooms.
Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish especially) are a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in Education, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field is required, plus 5 years of experience in the subject matter with 2 of those years as paid professional experience or 8 years of professional experience and specialized education and training in Teaching, History, Archaeology, Anthropology, or related fields.
Applicants need to have solid experience creating educational materials for the general public.
Applicants must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work independently.
Proven ability to excel in verbal communication, take direction, be a team player, flexibility to multitask and maintain stability under pressure.
Applicants must be willing and able to work with a wide range of staff and public, engage with topics of cultural heritage.

Working Conditions
Ability to regularly work onsite with staff, volunteers, and the public.
Supplemental Information
This position is a seasonal/intermittent (part-time) and does not provide benefits.
Salary based on experience.
