The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural and Historic Resources Division is currently seeking a part-time year-round Museum Educator for the Ridgeley Rosenwald School located in in Capitol Heights, MD.

The Educator is a front-facing staff member of the Ridgeley Rosenwald School team. The candidate will be responsible for developing and providing a welcoming, accessible, and engaging experience for all visitors.   This position pays at a rate of $16.25 per hour to $18.25 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

This is a part-time, hourly position for up to 24-30 hours a week. Some weekend and evening availability required. Flexibility is provided for students enrolled in college.

 The Ridgeley Rosenwald School focuses on connecting themes like education, preservation, self-determination/community, and leadership using the history of African American education throughout Prince George’s County for inclusive interpretation and community engagement.  

The Ridgeley Rosenwald School is an African-American schoolhouse built in 1927 for students in the community of Ridgeley and surrounding areas. Today, the site serves as a museum and meeting space. The Ridgeley Rosenwald School is one of four historic sites managed by the M-NCPPC Black History Program, which focus on the African American experience. The other sites are Abraham Hall, Dorsey Chapel, and the Concord Historic Site.

The Museum Educator plays a vital role in the Ridgeley Rosenwald School’s core team. The successful candidate will assist full-time staff with planning, coordinating, and staffing educational programs & activities, hosted both virtually and in-person.
  • Assists with developing and implementing collaborative programming for the Ridgeley Rosenwald School, with specific goals to produce programming reflective of current issues facing the region.
  • Ability to assist with in-depth community dialogues during public programming events and cultural celebrations, and community cultural celebrations. Develop and manage programs to address institutional and structural racism.
  • Supports outreach and tabling at public events.
  • Provides administrative support, including managing the community collaborators database.
  • Develops educational materials for tours.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in history, social studies, American studies, urban studies, museum studies, community engagement, social work or a related field.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
Important Worker Characteristics:
  • Ability to quickly grasp local history content with proven experience researching in primary and secondary sources.
  • Works well with volunteers to achieve programmatic goals.
  • Experience collaborating with community groups and organizations for programs and to help share their history in programming.
  • Firm understanding of Microsoft office suite, Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva is a plus.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with a team to achieve department and division-wide strategic goals.
  • Works well under tight deadlines and can multitask

This position requires working some weeknights and weekends.

A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.
