What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) - Braille Support position at The Maryland School for the Blind?
The Maryland School for the Blind is seeking a TVI to provide additional Braille instruction as well as to consult with classroom teachers regarding supporting students who are blind or have low vision.
SUMMARY : With supervision, coordinates educational programs for a designated group of academic students with visual impairment.
ACCOUNTABILITIES :
Essential Functions :
1. Providing Service :
- Teaches visually impaired students with multiple disabilities on an individual and group basis.
- Instructs in braille, Nemeth Code, braille-based technology, core curriculum, and expanded core.
- Facilitates and participates in the development, review and evaluation of individualized educational program (IEP) which may require the ability to observe and respond to a variety of environmental stimuli.
- Conducts evaluations and assessments to determine a student's reading medium needs.
- Provides in-service braille and Nemeth Code training and consultation related to teaching students who are blind or visually impaired to MSB staff.
2. Coordinating Service :

1. Plans and participates in on and off-campus student activities.
2. Performs additional duties as assigned
CONDITIONS :
Equipment Used : Augmentative communication Devices, copy machine, computer, various adaptive and orthopedic equipment and telephone.
Performance Standard : Must assure 100% commitment to the integration, coordination, and implementation of student programs, and compliance with health and safety standards.
Work Environment : Multiple indoor and outdoor environments with varying sound, lighting and temperature conditions. May be exposed to various conditions when providing direct care to students.
Work Schedule : 35 daytime hours, Monday through Friday with flextime within the workday and workweek. This position follows is temporary for the duration of the 2024-2025 school year.

Knowledge, skills and general abilities :
Qualifications :
1. Knowledge of reading, braille and Nemeth Code instruction for students with visual impairments.
2. Knowledge of instructional techniques using equipment & technology such Microsoft operating systems, iPads, braille displays, braille production programs, embossers, and telephones.
3. Knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEP's and performing appropriate teaching techniques.
4. Minimum of Bachelor's degree and ability to meet MSDE certification with an endorsement in Vision required.
5. General knowledge of visual impairment, including causes, manifestations and adaptations.
6. General knowledge of medical disorders such as seizures or restrictions; alternate modes of communication; and orthopedic impairments.
7. General knowledge of core and expanded core curriculum and classroom management.
After six months in this position, the employee is required to have :
1. General knowledge of case management and team leadership methods.
2. General knowledge of behavior management and modification techniques.
3. General knowledge of assigned student programs.
4. General knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
5. General knowledge of employee handbook.
Salary Description
39.87 - $79.42 per hour
