Job Summary:
A private family in Lima, NY, is seeking a warm, energetic, and reliable person to support their 8-year-old autistic child through New York State’s Community Habilitation (ComHab) program. This flexible, part-time summer role is ideal for someone who enjoys engaging with children, spending time outdoors, and creating meaningful experiences.
The position is paid through the family’s Self-Direction budget and administered by Heritage Christian Services, a certified Fiscal Intermediary. Staff are hired and trained through Heritage, with the family managing daily activities and scheduling.
About the Child:
This vibrant and curious 8-year-old thrives on interaction, routine, and new experiences. He is very verbal, loves asking questions, and enjoys activities that involve movement, nature, and exploration. While he enjoys Minecraft and video games, his family encourages time outdoors—he especially loves water, hikes, playgrounds, animals, and being out in the community.
We are looking for someone who can be more than a support person—someone who can help him grow, encourage new experiences, and be a consistent, trusted friend.
Responsibilities:
- Greet and support the child after summer school (help off the bus)
- Explore the community through outings such as:
- Library events (Avon, Lima, Mendon)
- Trampoline parks and new playgrounds
- Hikes, especially those that lead to water
- Visits to museums, Wild Wings, fish hatcheries, and duck ponds
- Swimming at the YMCA (staff admission included under his membership)
- Stops at favorite places like Country Max or Tim Hortons
- Support independence, communication, and confidence through play and conversation
- Keep outings fun, structured, and safe
Note: Food costs while with the child are covered by the family.
Schedule & Hours:
- Flexible summer schedule
- Some weekday afternoons after school
- Optional evenings or weekends for occasional date night coverage
- Potential for ongoing hours during the school year
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- Completion of training and onboarding through Heritage Christian Services
- Background check required
- Experience with autism or developmental disabilities is a plus
- Must be kind, dependable, open to adventure, and truly enjoy working with children
Compensation:
- $18.00/hour, paid through Self-Direction (via Heritage Christian Services)
- Mileage reimbursement anytime child is with you
- Food costs covered while with the child
- YMCA /Museum access is included during visits
