Department Summary:
The Hazard Identification Department (P233) is seeking a Group Leader to join our leadership team located at MITRE in McLean, VA. P233, a member of the Transportation Safety Division, is seeking to advance the United States to the next level of transportation safety. We develop and apply analytical capabilities and techniques to generate in-time safety intelligence and actionable mitigations from operational data.
The successful candidate is effective at communicating within MITRE, with MITRE sponsors and industry, and with potential sponsoring organizations, recognizing and following through on opportunities to leverage MITRE’s capabilities and expertise to advance the science of transportation safety.
Responsibilities:
- Work in partnership with the P230 leadership team and take an active leadership role in shaping and growing both the department’s talent and its capabilities for sponsor mission impact, as well as its business development activities, all in alignment with sponsor, division, CIT, and MITRE strategies; collaborate with other leaders across the organization and externally; serve as an engaged talent-cultivator.
- Serve as a direct supervisor for a group of 7-10 staff providing expert guidance and direction as a leader and partner to aid in appropriate staff project/assignment alignment; identify appropriate work opportunities; conduct regular performance and development conversations; facilitate staff understanding of relevant internal and external strategies (e.g., sponsor, P230, CIT, MITRE); prepare performance assessments and development plans; mentor and advocate for staff; provide recognition and articulate staff impactful contributions to the organization; communicate relevant information to staff and facilitate routine home management actions; support staff in understanding and navigating administrative procedures; actively promote the ability for staff to take charge of their career; and be engaged in advancing the organization.
- Communicate on a regular basis with work leaders on group member performance in order to provide staff with timely, constructive feedback and support their growth and development; leverage these work leader relationships to match staff competencies with projects and identify stretch assignments to develop new skills.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. Demonstrated ability to apply new innovations across a range of technical domains.
- Significant exposure to and experience solving sponsor mission-oriented challenges.
- Proven ability to recruit, retain, and grow a top-quality team.
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
- Substantial technical background with experience leading people and projects in one or more of the following competency areas: analysis of transportation safety data, hazard identification, risk assessment, transportation safety metrics, surface transportation operations (including vehicle, rail, mass transit).
- Experience in supporting governmental or private transportation organizations.
- Understanding of the mission and capability need areas for one or more governmental or private transportation organizations.
- Motivated and rewarded by the success and development of others.
