Job Title: Tribal Historical and Genealogical Researcher

Classification: Full-Time

General Job Description: The Tribal Historical and Genealogical Researcher position is a full-time position (1 FTE) in The Munsee Tribe in Kansas Administration for Native Americans (“ANA”) Project Office (“Project Office”). This position is funded by an ANA Social & Economic Development Strategies (“SEDS”) Grant that will last for 3 years. S/he will work with Tribal Members as well as the Document Collections Manager to ensure that all genealogical documentation is complete and prepared for the Document Collections Manager to organize into the Tribal Archive. The Tribal Historical and Genealogical Researcher will report to the Tribal Project Director and will oversee Tribal Volunteers assigned historical and genealogical research work. This position also requires the organization of cultural and historical programming.

Duties & Responsibilities: The Tribal Historical and Genealogical Researcher shall participate in professional development trainings conducted by consultants; travel for in-person research and ANA SEDS grant training; conduct genealogical research; conduct interviews for Project; manage, audit, and troubleshoot the Tribe’s Membership Files, Ancestor Files, and Genealogical database; report genealogical progress and issues to the Project Director and as needed, the General Committee and AOR; conduct research, analyze, compile, document, and report historical and genealogical information; assist Project Staff with the submission of information to the General Committee and for incorporation into Tribal newsletters related to Project updates; assist with the development and implementation of quarterly surveys of Tribal members; assist in the preparation of annual Munsee cultural tours; assist in the arrangement of genealogical and historical packets for annual Tribal meetings; recruit, mobilize, and train volunteers to assist in all aspects of Tribal research; liaison with historical and educational institutions, community partners and Tribal members to gather information; assist in the development of cultural and historical programming for the Tribal community; study, analyze, and record Tribal history and ancestry; and take direction from the Tribal Project Director on items related to meeting the requirements of the ANA SEDS Grant; and work regularly with the Tribal Project Director, Project Consultants, and Tribal Volunteers to ensure that all processes are standardized and meet the Project objective.

Qualifications: Minimum of high school diploma or GED and 5 years of professional experience or any combination of experience, education, or training that would support the required knowledge and abilities are also qualifying. Must have strong attention to detail, with ability to note slightest details. Dedication to see projects through to completion is a must. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with genealogical methods and programs, such as Family Tree Maker and/or Ancestry.com is preferred. Experience and proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred.

Leadership skills, Interpersonal skills, Ability to delegate effectively, and Time Management Skills are required.

Experience/Competencies: Previous employment or volunteer experience as researcher or research assistant or graduate-level research or historical research is preferred. Experience compiling data and reports, creating files, and monitoring records.
