Job Description

The Thermal Energy Science & Technologies group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a highly motivated graduate student for an internship position. This role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in thermal energy storage, heat transfer, and system optimization, supporting the advancement of renewable energy technologies.

As an intern, you will work alongside leading experts, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to projects that address real-world energy challenges. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field, along with experience in thermal systems, energy storage materials, or high-temperature processes. Familiarity with advanced modeling tools, experimental setups, and renewable energy technologies is a plus.

This position will support NREL's work in thermal energy storage tank design for current generation molten nitrate salt as storage medium. For more information, visit : https : / / www.nrel.gov / csp

The work requires fundamental understanding in material compatibility with molten nitrate salt and heat transfer properties in a high-temperature corrosive environment. The candidate will perform experimental as well as simulation studies on a novel tank floor design that can address the existing thermomechanical failure of the metallic tank floor.

Responsibilities include thorough and clear documentation of work, maintaining clean and safe workspace, and conducting work with integrity and the highest professional standards. The successful candidate will complete safety and operational training as part of their workload.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate : Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate : Earned a bachelor's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate : Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master's degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate : Earned a master's degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate PhD : Completed master's degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

A successful candidate will have the following set of work qualifications :

  • Prior experience in thermal simulation
  • Prior experience in thermodynamic calculation software such as FactSage and ThermoCalc
  • Prior experience with metal- and ceramic-based materials at high temperatures
  • In addition, a successful candidate will have :

  • Computer literate including full fluency in Microsoft Office.
  • Examples of prior work demonstrating fundamental understanding of materials science
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing work requirements
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

    Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

    NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

    NREL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), which includes a favorable background investigation. Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
