of non-releasable wild animals, our wildlife care center houses such diverse species as,
bobcats, gray fox, barn owl, and many other birds and mammals, most of which are
native to the California environment. Our mission is to provide wildlife educational
programs and publications teaching people to coexist safely and humanely with wildlife.
Duties and Responsibilities
- All aspects of animal husbandry including but not limited to diet preparation, cleaning,
feeding, medicating, enrichment, and training for all birds, mammals, and reptile
housed at The Nature of Wildworks Care Center
- Maintain daily records on animal husbandry, training, and enrichment
- Transport animals to and from the vet clinic when needed
- Scheduling and providing on-site public tours of the facility and outreach programs
- Required to work weekends and holidays as needed
- General Maintenance of the facility
- Responsible for recruiting and retaining volunteers to fill essential volunteer positions
on a weekly basis and for special events
- In collaboration with staff, assess needs and develop volunteer roles to address those
needs.
- Conduct volunteer outreach, recruitment, education, orientation, and training
- Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers
- Work closely with Programs to ensure volunteers have adequate training and a good
experience when they are on campus or volunteering remotely
- Maintain volunteer database and calendar
- Create and send promotional emails, newsletters, and social media posts, record
keeping as needed including but not limited to the daily report
- Maintain a clean and organized work place including all animal and human areas
- Work with the Director and other staff as appropriate to develop and review
husbandry plans and procedures for animals residing at the Center.
- Maintain detailed records on the daily husbandry and medical care of each animal.
- Follow all proper and recommended veterinary medical care instructions.
- Provide appropriate quantity and quality of food and water to animals on a daily basis.
- Ensure animals are provided with enrichment and exercised as appropriate.
- Monitor animals, noting any eating, drinking, health, behavior or temperament
changes and informing the Director to discuss any issues.
- Work collaboratively with the Director and other veterinary care providers to develop
and then implement specific veterinary medical care plans as needed to address
particular issues with any of the animals.
- Administer basic first aid to any animal’s minor wounds as needed and consult local
veterinary care providers for other medical conditions or health concerns.
- Train, manage and oversee volunteers or other AH staff assisting on property with
animal care.
- Assist with guest tours of the animal facilities as needed.
- Ensure a safe work environment, follow safety guidelines and model safe work
practices; take immediate action to remedy or address any safety issues.
***Must be available to stay overnight at the facility when Director is absent
Requirements
- Graduate of America’s Teaching Zoo or two years’ experience working in a public
animal facility preferred
- A valid driver’s license
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and holidays
- Ability to lift, push, pull 50 pounds
- Community outreach and engagement
- Event planning and project management
- Record keeping and database management
- Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)
- Time management and problem-solving skills
- Capable of working in all weather conditions
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
