In the early 19th Century, several social activists understood the need to provide opportunities for individuals who were blind. As a result of their efforts, The New York Institution for the Blind was incorporated in 1831. The school held the first class for children who were blind in the United States when it opened its doors over 190 years ago on March 15, 1832.
Today our campus includes:
- 3 classroom buildings, 1 of which houses the administration offices, library, and auditorium.
- 3 dormitories provide residential programs for students during the week.
- Gymnasium with a fitness room and indoor track
- Swimming pool, bowling alley, recreation room, and accessible playground.
- More than 17 acres of spacious, well-cared-for grounds for student's play, relaxation, and socialization.
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Groundskeeper to join our team. As a Groundskeeper, you will be responsible for maintaining the appearance and functionality of our outdoor spaces. If you have a passion for landscaping and enjoy working outdoors, we would love to hear from you.
This position will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned buildings' interiors, performing a variety of custodial and minor building maintenance duties as assigned, and performing related work as required. Custodians are Essential Employees and are required to work during weather and emergency school closures.
The Custodian will make an impact in many areas, with responsibilities and duties including, but not limited to:
· Completes work order forms as scheduled, signs and returns forms upon their completion;
· Works in all areas of maintenance function, covering but not limited to the following:
i. Sweeps, scrubs, and mops floors; strips, waxes, buffs, and seals
ii. Vacuums and shampoos rugs; washes, dusts and polish furniture, woodwork and shelves;
iii. Empty and clean waste receptacles; clean walls, fountains, windows, and restrooms; replenish supplies; turn lights off, and lock doors and windows;
iv. Reports necessary repairs; cleans and maintains equipment and materials used in work; and may perform a variety of building tasks including moving furniture and equipment, replacing lights and air filters, assembling shelving, performing minor repairs and other similar duties.
· Keeps premises of assigned buildings in a clean and orderly condition, including entrances, stairs, walkways, and windows;
· Cleans the elevator floor, track, buttons, and handrail;
· Maintains the janitor closet in the assigned work area;
· Assists the housekeeper with removing heavy garbage;
· Delivers mail and packages between departments and buildings on campus as directed;
· Performs minor and routine maintenance activities; submits work orders for maintenance jobs beyond the scope of the custodian/porter job description;
· Report to the supervisor any safety issues that may be observed;
· Participates in training and staff development activities to acquire and maintain both interpersonal and operational skills necessary for successful job performance;
· Perform other duties assigned by a supervisor not listed but which are part of the work scope.
Must have a valid driver's license
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, sitting, bending, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting, moving and carrying up to 50 pounds.
Education, Knowledge, and Skills:
· High school graduate or equivalent;
· Able to calculate, distinguish colors, and follow written and verbal instructions.
· Ability to work well with other department employees and work productively around students;
· It might be necessary to work late and/or some weekends and holidays if needed.
