Overview
The IT Business Data Analyst is responsible for transforming large volumes of structured and unstructured data into actionable insights, predictive analytics, and other learning models to support and drive informed decision-making. This role is responsible for analyzing complex data sets, deriving new knowledge, and applying advanced analytical techniques to solve business problems that may not be immediately well-defined. The IT Business Data Analyst will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for automation and optimization, ensuring that data-driven solutions align with the organization's strategic objectives.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:

  • IT Asset Lifecycle Management process.

  • Data governance and compliance.

  • Data audits and data quality assurance.

  • Data analytics projects from concept to execution.

  • Business intelligence dashboards, reports, and scorecards.


Teach:

  • Team members and business stakeholders how to interpret and use data insights to improve processes and make data-driven decisions.

  • Training business units on how to effectively use dashboards and data visualization tools for reporting and analysis using tools innate to the organization.

  • Colleagues and business leaders on the evolving role of data as a strategic asset and how it can be leveraged to drive business success.


Learn:

  • ServiceNow and Workday platforms.

  • NYPL's IT Asset and Software Inventory Lifecycle.

  • Collecting, cleaning, and validating data from various sources, including databases, spreadsheets, and APIs.

  • Collaborating with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and translating them into actionable insights.

  • Emerging trends and advancements in data analytics, machine learning, and AI.

  • The latest industry best practices in data management, business intelligence, and data security.


Improve:

  • The effectiveness and efficiency of IT Asset and Software Management.

  • The functionality and adoption of business intelligence dashboards through user feedback and iterative updates.

  • Data models and algorithms based on new business needs, performance outcomes, and emerging trends.

  • Opportunities to improve data processes and workflows.

  • Implementation of data-driven solutions to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making.

  • Development and maintenance of data models and visualizations to communicate insights effectively.

  • Design, development, and maintenance of dashboards and reports to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics.

  • Data quality and integrity by implementing data quality checks and standards.

  • Data governance initiatives, including data classification, access control, and data retention policies.

  • Ad-hoc analysis and reporting as needed to support business decisions.


Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:

  • Become familiar with the key stakeholders and SMEs on the team.

  • Build relationships with IT partners and leadership.

  • Understand NYPL's culture, mission and organizational structure.

  • Begin exploring the data environment, identifying potential data quality issues, and starting to clean and prepare data for analysis.

  • Survey and inventory the various data sources, platforms and their reporting and dashboard capabilities.

  • Develop a prioritized project plan and timeline for active work needs.

  • Establish a regular cadence for meetings and updates with teams and stakeholders.


3 months, this person will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in using data analysis tools and techniques to extract meaningful insights from data

  • Develop and deliver basic reports and dashboards to address specific business questions.

  • Identify opportunities to streamline data processes and automate tasks

  • Develop a Data Inventory Framework.

  • Establish clear data governance policies, standards and processes.

  • Gain a solid understanding of IT Asset Lifecycle Management and its integration with business operations.


6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Establish and enforce policies, standards, and practices to ensure data is accurate, secure, compliant and effectively managed.

  • Conduct advanced data analysis, including predictive modeling and forecasting.

  • Provide strategic insights and recommendations based on data analysis to drive business decisions.

  • Contribute to data governance initiatives, such as data standards, metadata management, and data security.

  • Collaborate effectively with teams across the organization to leverage data for shared goals.

  • Proactively identify opportunities to leverage data and technology to improve business performance

  • Lead initiatives to improve the business' data literacy and promote data-driven decision making across teams.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide business intelligence, market research, and data analysis services, including developing and maintaining dashboards, reports, and scorecards.

  • Support IT leadership with insights, reports, and analysis for strategic decision-making.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their data needs and develop user-friendly visualizations.

  • Manage data analytics projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business goals.

  • Leverage advanced analytics and data mining techniques to uncover insights, trends, and opportunities.

  • Research and implement cutting-edge data analysis techniques and models.

  • Foster data literacy and promote data-driven decision-making across the team.

  • Articulate a vision and roadmap for leveraging data as a valuable technology asset.

  • Collaborate with information managers, architects, and business units to share knowledge and provide guidance on data interpretation and usage.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for data-related inquiries.

  • Perform additional duties as required.



Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in data analytics, data science, computer science, management information systems, finance, statistics, or related fields.
Required Experience

  • 2 years of experience as a data analyst, business intelligence analyst, market research analyst, financial analyst, statistician, or equivalent roles.

  • Proven experience in conducting statistical analysis and building models with advanced scripting language such as R, SPSS, SQL or other analytic tools.

  • Considerable experience in solving business problems with advanced analytical solutions.

  • Experience with consumer-level data for the purposes of analysis, reporting, and/or marketing.


Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to clearly explain complex data insights to diverse audiences, fostering alignment and understanding.

  • Strong understanding of decision-making processes, workflows, and the business and information needs of IT unit leaders and product managers.

  • Proficient in data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving, with the ability to identify patterns, derive actionable insights, and challenge conventional wisdom.

  • Demonstrates a quick learning ability, adaptability, and a results-oriented approach, delivering solutions with a measurable impact on business performance.

  • Effective in influencing others, building support for proposals with sound logic and compelling business cases.

  • Strong decision-making and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
