Overview
The NYPL is hiring Lead Tutors to provide homework help and enrichment activities to elementary grade students in 20 branch libraries during the 2022-2023 school year. The Lead Tutor is also responsible for overseeing the logistical implementation of the program at their assigned location day-to-day.

Lead Tutors will work 16 hours per week, M-Th, during the program hours of approximately 3-6 PM with additional hours required for professional development, meetings, and preparation. Responsibilities
- Oversee daily procedures at sites, including administrative procedures, collaborating with branch staff about enrichment activities, and managing other logistics,
- Serve as the communication liaison for the program,
- Act as the point-person for parent/caregiver communication,
- Support Teen Reading Ambassador Pages assigned to each location,
- Work in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels,
- Attend periodic staff meetings for youth evaluation and information exchange among Tutors, Library staff, Teen Reading Ambassador Pages, and supervisors
- Use best practices when tutoring students,
- Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth,
- Administer enrichment activities to students in the afterschool hours,
- Support the Children’s Librarian and other branch staff in the implementation of programs in the afterschool hours,
- May be assigned to work in other program sites,
- Performs other duties assigned
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program, with at least two or more years completed or equivalent experience, at an approved accredited educational institution, or
- Bachelor’s degree
- HS Diploma or equivalent required
Required Experience
- Prior experience working in a formal or informal education setting with children and/or teens
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas
Required Skills
- Effective communication skills when working with children, parents, co-workers, and supervisors,
- Interest in urban library services,
- Interest in helping children to improve their reading, writing, math, social studies, and science skills,
- Possess a concrete understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History, and Foreign Language concepts,
- Computer and basic technology skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications
- Ability to speak foreign languages preferred

- Informal mentorship of Teen Reading Ambassador Pages and Tutors
