Job Summary
The NYPL is hiring Tutors to provide homework help and enrichment activities to elementary grade students in 7 branch libraries.
Tutors will work either 16 hours per week, M-Th, during the program hours of approximately 3-6PM with additional hours required for professional development, meetings, and preparation, or 8 hours per week on either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays during those same times. Tutors will work approximately 36 weeks per year.
Responsibilities:
- The After School Tutor will work under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and will:
- Work in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels,
- Use best practices when tutoring students,
- Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth,
- Support Teen Reading Ambassador Pages assigned to each location,
- Administer enrichment activities to students in the afterschool hours,
- Support the Children's Librarian and other branch staff in the implementation of programs in the afterschool hours,
- May be assigned to work in other program sites,
- Perform other duties assigned
Required Education and Certifications
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program, with at least two or more years completed or equivalent experience, at an approved accredited educational institution; or
- Bachelor's Degree
- HS Diploma or equivalent required
- Prior experience working in a formal or informal education setting with children and/or teens
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas
- Effective communication skills in working with children, parents, co-workers and supervisors
- Interest in urban library services
- Interest in helping children to improve their reading, writing, math, social studies, and science skills
- Possess a concrete understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History, and Foreign Language concepts
- Computer and basic technology skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications
- Ability to speak foreign languages preferred
