The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

The New York Times is looking for an experienced correspondent to cover China.

This is a chance to join a committed team of journalists who have a history of award-winning work, an eagerness to experiment with new and developing story forms, and a passion for bringing Times journalism to a global audience across digital, print and other media.

China's transformation to geopolitical colossus over the past several decades has bolstered its confidence and its influence abroad. Beijing has leveraged its might, both commercially and militarily, to redraw the terms of trade, security and diplomacy. Xi Jinping, China's leader, has made it clear that the country is intent on securing its prosperity and power in a post-Covid world. Under his leadership, China has sought to offer a model of governance that challenges the liberal democratic order and the dominance of the United States.

China is one of the biggest stories we cover – and it is equally exciting and challenging. It is a constantly changing and diverse nation with few parallels on the planet, and reporting on it touches nearly every major issue. Geopolitics. Demographics. Inequality. Climate Change. Trade. Technology.

The role requires a strong thinker and writer with the ability to juggle breaking news, smart analysis and ambitious enterprise.

The role will be based in Asia and will report to the Times's China Editor.

Main Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Cover live and breaking news, pursue enterprise and investigations in the region
  • Generate ideas and find themes for coverage
  • Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits
  • Collaborate with other Times journalists during major news moments and projects
  • Work with colleagues across Photo, Video, Graphics, Audio and other departments to bring stories to life in a variety of formats
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Our Ideal Candidate Is

  • Accomplished in international reporting and writing, preferably for a global news organization
  • Experienced in covering China, and/or has fluency in Mandarin
  • Eager to use creative ways to tell stories, including working across media and using open-source intelligence tools
  • A curious learner who puts integrity and accuracy first
  • An elegant and powerful writer and thinker
  • Able to juggle breaking news, smart analysis and ambitious enterprise
  • Committed to The New York Times's strategy, standards and mission

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
